MS High School Team Preview: St. Andrew's Saints

PBR Mississippi Staff

The 2023 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Mississippi.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Pearl, MS at Trustmark Park as they compete for a state championship, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Mississippi. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing other pieces of content covering the Magnolia State.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state. Each week we will be releasing our players of the week, updating the Top 10 in each MHSAA classification as well as a Power 25.

*Please note that all information is based on team preview questionnaires that were sent out and returned by the participating high school coaches.

Team Outlook:

St. Andrew’s Head Coach Mark Fanning feels good about his roster heading in to 2023 as he returns 7 positional starters and 6 pitchers that threw varsity innings a year ago. The Saints finished 17-10 though lost in the first round of the 3A state playoffs. Coach Fanning feels the experience his younger players gained last season should help as they look to make a deeper playoff run this spring.

Top returners include senior Andrew Carron (INF/RHP - Rhodes College), juniors Rolen Fanning (CF), Friend Walker (SS), and Walker Van Meter (INF). Carron finished with 24 RBI’s last season, which leads all returning players and should be a major part of the pitching staff as he threw 33 innings in 2022.

Underclassmen that could play big roles in the Saints success this spring will be sophomore Stone Myrick (INF/OF) and freshman Justin Word (MI). Word had a solid season as an 8th grader and is considered by our staff as one of the top 2026 players in the state.

Always a solid program, look for St. Andrew’s to contend in 2023 and with solid young talent, the foreseeable future looks bright.
