MS High School Team Preview: West Jones Mustangs

PBR Mississippi Staff

The 2023 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Mississippi.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Pearl, MS at Trustmark Park as they compete for a state championship, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Mississippi. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing other pieces of content covering the Magnolia State.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state. Each week we will be releasing our players of the week, updating the Top 10 in each MHSAA classification as well as a Power 25.

*Please note that all information is based on team preview questionnaires that were sent out and returned by the participating high school coaches.

Team Outlook:

After a 15-11 season in 2022, West Jones Head Coach Trey Sutton feels his Mustangs may be ready to advance further in the 5A state playoffs in 2023. Sutton returns 6 positional starters and 5 pitchers and will look to overall experience, pitching depth, and team defense to help lead the charge into this spring.

Top returners for the Mustangs are senior Lawson Odom (SS/C/RHP - Southern Miss), juniors Camden Clark (C/RHP), Jaxon Rayborn (1B/RHP), and Kale Matthews (RHP), along with sophomore Dash Piper (3B/RHP). The slick fielding Odom is a former PBR Future Games member and will look to produce for the Mustangs both offensively and on the mound after going 3-1 in 31 innings last year. Clark is another former PBR Future Games participant and is one of the better catchers in the state.

Other players Sutton will count on will be senior Caleb Flynn (1B/OF/LHP), junior Carter Leggett (RHP) and sophomore Carson Green (OF). Both Flynn and Leggett could be very helpful on the mound while Green’s speed and and defensive prowess may come in handy.

Look for the Mustangs to continue to be in the mix of things at the 5A level and a possible deep playoff run in 2023.
