MS High School Team Preview: West Point Green Wave

PBR Mississippi Staff

The 2023 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Mississippi.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Pearl, MS at Trustmark Park as they compete for a state championship, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Mississippi. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing other pieces of content covering the Magnolia State.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state. Each week we will be releasing our players of the week, updating the Top 10 in each MHSAA classification as well as a Power 25.

*Please note that all information is based on team preview questionnaires that were sent out and returned by the participating high school coaches.

Team Outlook:

2023 has the potential to be an exciting year for the West Point Green Wave. Coach Mitch Bohon returns 7 positional starters and 6 pitchers that contributed innings last season.

Junior Tyrese Johnson (INF/RHP), a Pearl River CC recruit, is primed to lead the Green Wave into the 2023 campaign and hopes to improve on his stellar offensive numbers from a year ago. He will get help from a group of seniors that include Elijah Young (1B/LHP - East MS CC), Corbin Hendricks (C), Jaylen Davis (MI - Stillman College), and Ahmari Cox (OF). Each of these young men should have the opportunity to play at the next level after their respective senior seasons.

Two juniors looking to step up once again are Cortlin Carter (OF) and Coledan Carter (INF/RHP), both praised for the hard playing style which seems to be a characteristic of this team.

An underclassmen looking to prove himself is outfielder Bradley Cohen. The freshman looks to get the chance to start using his solid defensive ability and high baseball IQ while working to help the Green Wave improve on their 12-14 season in 2022.

All and all the West Point roster looks to have plenty of talent to make them very competitive in the 5A class heading into the spring.
