MS High School Team Preview: Sumrall Bobcats

PBR Mississippi Staff

The 2023 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Mississippi.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Pearl, MS at Trustmark Park as they compete for a state championship, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Mississippi. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing other pieces of content covering the Magnolia State.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state. Each week we will be releasing our players of the week, updating the Top 10 in each MHSAA classification as well as a Power 25.

*Please note that all information is based on team preview questionnaires that were sent out and returned by the participating high school coaches.

Team Outlook:

After a very exciting 2022 season, which saw the Sumrall Bobcats capture the 4A State Championship, Coach Andy Davis will return a solid, yet somewhat inexperienced group. Davis feels with the young talent he has on the roster coupled with 3 key returning positional starters the Bobcats will once again be in the mix as contenders in 2023.

Top returners include seniors Walker Long (C/1B), Landon Holliman (SS), Barrett Breazeale (OF), Carson Moon (1B/RHP), and Keaton Mauldin (LHP). Holliman, a Mississippi Gulf Coast CC recruit, and Breazeale look to provide speed at the top of the order with hope the big bats of Long (Holmes CC) and others will drive them in.

Other key players expected to step up for the Bobcats will be juniors Cade Clinton (C/1B) and speedy Malek McNair (OF). McNair was superior base running threat last season with 25 stolen bases on the season.

Underclassmen that will be counted on include sophomores Landon Hawkins (INF/RHP) and Caden Williamson (OF/LHP), freshman Braelyn Harrison, and 8th grader Drew Davis.

The Bobcats lost plenty of innings from last season, though returning bullpen ace Keaton Mauldin (LHP), looks to anchor a very promising pitching staff. Arms Davis expects to make an impact in 2023 will be seniors Hampton Baudoin (RHP), and Carson Moon (Holmes CC), sophomore’s Leo Odom (RHP), Landon Hawkins, and Caden Williamson, with Drew Davis (RHP) getting innings as well.

Look for the Bobcats to be right back in the thick of things come May.
