Each week during the high school season, we will be announcing the Mizuno Pitcher and Player of the Week for that particular week. Numerous players across the state continue to put up impressive numbers both as position players and pitchers on the mound. This year we will be selecting one Pitcher of the Week and one Player of the Week based on nominations from high school coaches across the state. Thanks to Mizuno for sponsoring both awards this season.

Let's take a look at the Mizuno Player and Pitcher of the Week for Week 1 (February 9 - February 18):

Ty Long SS / RHP / Ripley, MS / 2024 Rankings  StateRank: 13 / POS: 2 Opening day did not disappoint for the Southern Miss commit as he got the nod on the mound for the Tigers against Tishomingo County on the road. Long who is known for his athleticism and ability at SS, also pleaded his case on the mound, which earned him Pitcher of the Week honors for Week 1 of the 2023 season. During his outing against the Braves, Long logged 6 innings of work, allowing just 2 hits, 1 walk, 0 earned runs and collected a total of 15 strikeouts in Ripley's 3-1 win. Long worked easily in the mid-80's with the fastball and even ran it up to 88 mph at times, showed confidence in the curveball as he was able to locate the offering in any and all counts at 70-72 mph.

Reid Kent 3B / SS / Oxford, MS / 2024 Rankings  StateRank: 38 / POS: 5 Reid Kent did enough damage in his first three games of the season to probably solidify a statistically good MONTH! Kent opened the year with a 3 for 4 performance vs. Kirk Academy, followed by an outstanding 5-5 day vs. Baker (AL), and finished the week with a 3-3 game vs. Saint Stanislaus. The Chargers won all three games and Kent finished with 3 doubles, 1 triple, 1 home run, and 12 rbi's. Not a bad start at all for the uncommitted junior and our PBR Mississippi Player of the Week!
