Today, Prep Baseball Report Mississippi announces its initial Class of 2020 rankings. Although it is still extremely early to forecast 2020 prospects, especially with some players still waiting to record varsity innings, the acceleration of recruiting process has already led to some of the top 2020 prospects pledging their commitments to schools.

In all, 25 players are listed in the initial release, although many more received consideration. The rankings process for PBR Mississippi is detailed and vested in our ability to see as many players as possible, across the state.

The list will undoubtedly see major shifts and additions in the coming months and years, but for now, the initial rendition features 25 young prospects.

Topping the list is a physical left-handed hitter in 3B Kellum Clark (Jackson Academy). Clark is an imposing figure for his age at 6-foot-4, 221 pounds. The left-handed power combined with the bat speed and overall approach at the plate ranks him as one of the best in the nation. This is also why he was included in the recent 2020 Overall Rankings update where he checked in at No. 12. The Mississippi State recruit is surprisingly athletic for his size, with impressive arm strength that has already created significant buzz in the recruiting world.

Coming in at No. 2 is SS Peyton Puckett (Tupelo HS). Puckett has a projectable 6-foot, 185-pound frame with room for to continued growth and added strength. The Mississippi State recruit has already shown early in his career the potential to turn into a premium middle-of-the-field defender with quality arm strength. Offensively, he shows a simple, repeatable right-handed stroke with present bat speed, and an obvious feel to put the barrel on the baseball.

The only uncommitted player in the top five comes in at No. 3, SS Sam Bianco (Oxford HS). Bianco shows plenty of intriguing tools on the diamond, and at an early age already has the understanding and advance instincts for the game. Bianco is a quick-twitch type athlete that finds a way to show off his running ability whether it is getting down the line or taking an extra bag. At the plate, the left-handed hitter has proven to be a tough out with a direct path to the baseball and solid bat speed.

At No. 4 is C/RHP Kemp Alderman (Newton Academy), a Mississippi recruit. The physical 6-foot-2, 215-pound frame has present strength throughout. The primary catcher has shown explosive bat speed with pull side power potential as well as impressive arm strength on the mound with fastball touching 88-89 mph and solid sinking action.

Rounding out the top five is a Louisiana State recruit, RHP Brooks Rice (Madison Central HS). The righty projects very well with a wiry 6-foot-2, 170-pound frame. The arm action is long through the back and he releases from a high-3/4 arm slot in order to leverage the ball and create plane low in the zone. Rice is a very high ceiling talent and has made a clear jump from a year ago with his fastball touching 87-89 mph.

Moving forward, PBR’s boots-on-the-ground philosophy will keep PBR staff on the road watching fall games, practices and workouts. PBR events will run in the late fall and winter as well. The rankings are an ever-shifting practice as players continue to get better and as PBR continues to find more players across the great state of Mississippi.
