Mississippi Preseason ID: Quick Hits

Matt Miller
State Director

Ridgeland, MS - The Mississippi Preseason ID was held on Saturday, January 14th at Freedom Ridge Park in Ridgeland, MS. This event was an open event that consisted of some of the top prospects from the 2023-2026 classes. These players went through extended pro-style workout that included batting practice using Trackman and Blast Motion, ran the 60 yard dash using Swift Performance, and much more. Pitchers were able to throw in simulated bullpens during the workout and were able to get numbers and metrics off of our Trackman unit, such as pitch velocity, spin rate, horizontal & vertical movement & much more. There were some players who showed up and continued to build off of prior performances, but there were also some new names who jumped onto our radar with a strong showing on Saturday.

Kicking off our post-event coverage for this event, we take a look back at some of the top performers and standouts from Saturday. Continuing over the course of the next week or so, we will release different statistical leaderboards for the event then transition into releasing individual scouting reports for each player in attendance.

quick hits

+ INF/RHP Landon Hawkins (Sumrall,2025) was a standout this weekend at Freedom Ridge Park with a mature look and polished skill set. The tall, lean Hawkins shows the ability to play any infield position though looks to move to 3B should he add mass throughout the reminder of his high school career. At the plate, he rattled off several line drives working the middle of the field, with an exit velocity reaching 90 mph. Hawkins also has solid feel for 3 pitches on the mound and stayed in the zone with all three. His fastball worked into the low 80's on a chilly day with good shape to his breaking ball and a change up that mimicked his fastball well.

+ INF/RHP Cannon Hensarling (Ocean Springs, 2025) has a frame to get excited about. The lean, fluid moving sophomore still has development ahead of him but opened some eyes this weekend showing signs of next level potential in several areas. At the plate, Hensarling uses a pull side approach with slight loft to his swing and power on the way. On the mound he already had the stuff too make recruiters get excited with a fastball into the low 80's though his secondary stuff looks to be superior in the making.

+ OF Brooks Crawley (Northwest Rankin, 2026) brought some serious pop to Ridgeland on Saturday as the freshman featured an exit velocity of 93 mph good for the second highest of the day. The exciting fact is Crawley does it from both sides of the plate, with plus power potential from both sides as well. An injury kept him away from the Junior Future Games last season and now Crawley looks to be working himself back and ready to pick up where he left off.

+ LHP/OF John Woods Hollowell (Jackson Prep, 2024) was another bright spot on the mound showing off a 4 pitch arsenal including 2 solid breaking balls and fastball into the low 80's. There was a distinct change in action between his slider and curveball and both were pitches that should give hitters fits this spring. Hollowell also showed some upside at the plate with an all fields approach with several line drives during his hitting round.

+ C/OF/RHP Jackson Meehan (Northwest Rankin, 2026) could be a super utility player moving forward as the freshman showed off his ability in several spots on Saturday. Possibly the most impressive was the way he moved behind the plate. Meehan was vocal, showed an arm on the rise (71 mph from behind the plate), and an event best pop time of 2.07. With the looseness and length of his arm action, Meehan in our opinion will move into prospect status on the mound very soon. Follow him!
