Mississippi Scout Blog: Week 1 Games

Matt Miller
PBR Mississippi Scouting Director

The Mississippi Scout Blog provides insider information and scouting notes from the PBR Scouting Staff during the season. This running blog will feature information on underclass prospects, unsigned seniors, draft prospects, and anything else that is notable. We will provide a wide range of information, including player evaluations, velocities, pop times, home to first times, and more.

Continue to check back over the course of the week, as the Mississippi Scouting Staff will continue to add scouting reports.

Monday, February 14th

+ RHP Cole Richardson (2024) of South Jones HS has plenty of upside. The 6-4 lean, yet sturdy built RHP displayed a 3 pitch mix in his first outing of the year and showed lots of maturity for a sophomore. Working 80-84 mph with his fastball and nice shape to a developing breaking ball, his use of the change up was what was really impressive. Richardson had no problems throwing the change to lefties or righties which is rare for younger arms. Look for his velocity to continue to improve and as it does his change up will be more affective to even advanced hitters.

+ RHP Myles Green (2022) a Southwest CC recruit showed some athleticism on the mound in his first outing of the year. The senior sat 81-82 (T83) with his fastball while showing good feel for a breaking ball with 11/5 shape and swing and miss type action. The Aggies will look for Green to throw the bulk of pitching staff's innings this spring.

+ RHP Blaine Causey (2022) a Holmes CC recruit will be county on heavily by South Jones both offensively on on the mound. The senior was sharp in relief on Tuesday evening with a fastball that worked 83-85 mph and late action to his breaking ball. Causey picked up a big 2 run double on  fastball over the heart of the plate using a well balanced and aggressive approach.

Tuesday, February 15th

+ RHP Collin Pipkin (2023) of Greene County continues to improve each time we see him. The dual prospect will be asked to provide both offensive production and log a huge percentage of innings. This past Tuesday was Pipkins first opportunity of the spring. The righty showed flashes of what to expect this season as his fastball hovered around 81-82 mph (T84) with lots of depth to his 12/6 bender. The SS also collected 3 hits on the night.

+ RHP Gage Thompson (2025) of Oak Grove is a freshman that will continue to gain attention. Also a middle infielder, Thompson should pitch a good bit for the Warriors as he brings a fastball that reaches 85 mph to the table. The stocky built hurler also features a very polished curveball that when down will keep even the top hitters from opposing teams in check.

Wednesday, February 16th

+ CF Seth Farni (2023) of Saint Stanislaus is one of the more dynamic players in the state. The Ole Miss commit showed why on Wednesday night as he used a very aggressive and synced up swing with a big controlled load to put one over the wall at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. Farni also runs very well (6.7) though is very instinctive so it looks as he played faster. Farsi is on the short list for next year's Super 60 possibilities!

+ OF Kyle Stegall (2023) also of Saint Stanislaus showed good pop on Wednesday driving a fastball away for and opposite field homer, though consistently has more of line drive approach. The muscular Stegall also runs very (6.7) making him very valuable in the gaps as well. Look for h, along with Farni to be major contributors to the Rockachaws offense.

Friday, February 18th

+ RHP Kaden Irving (2023) of Gautier showed a solid 3 pitch mix last night. The Ole Miss recruit worked his fastball 86-87 (T88) while displaying excellent arm action with his change and good 12/6 tumbling action with the curveball. With his large durable frame Irvin should look to log lots of innings for the Gators this spring.
