Mississippi Scout Blog: Week 3 Games

Matt Miller
State Director

The Mississippi Scout Blog provides insider information and scouting notes from the PBR Scouting Staff during the season. This running blog will feature information on underclass prospects, unsigned seniors, draft prospects, and anything else that is notable. We will provide a wide range of information, including player evaluations, velocities, pop times, home to first times, and more.

Continue to check back over the course of the week, as the Mississippi Scouting Staff will continue to add scouting reports.

Saturday, March 5th

+ RHP Andrew Knight was stellar on Saturday. The 2022 kept hitters off balance while sitting in the mid 80s with his fastball (T-86). The most impressive was his confidence in his change up, as he at one point tripled up with it for a big strikeout. Knight, headed to Pearl River CC next year, will be an integral part of the process as the Bobcats look to make a repeat trip to Trustmark.

+ RHP Jackson Evers of Madison Ridgeland Academy looked strong on Saturday as the 2023 works himself into mid season shape. The Ole Miss recruit was up to 88 mph with his fastball and showed some very sharp and late action to his breaking ball which produced several swing and misses. MRA will count heavily on the arm of Evers if the Patriots look at making another trip to the state championship.

Thursday, March 3rd

+ RHP Landon James (2022) of Oak Grove should get some play from recruiters after his outing on Thursday. The uncommitted senior making his first start of the season worked up to 87 mph while sitting 83/84. James also showed good feel for his breaking ball which created plenty of swings and misses. The Warriors will look for lots of mound production out of James if they look to make another deep run.

+ RHP Brennan Jones of Madison Ridgeland Academy has some of the best sink we've seen in a while. When the uncommitted 2023 throws his running fastball on the inner half of the plate to righties you can almost expect a ground ball or miss. The action tends to happen during the swing path of the hitter and with velocities reaching into the upper 80's expect Jones to be a hot commodity to recruiters as the season moves on.

+ LHP Corey Watkins of Madison Ridgeland Academy was solid on Thursday. The 2024 lefty worked into the low 80's with his fastball getting plenty of ground balls with late life. Watkins also showed some good developing spin while getting some help from his solid defense. The sophomore could be a big plus for the Patriots as they move deeper into district play.

WEDNESDAY, March 2nd

+ OF/2B Barrett Brezeale OF Sumrall has potential to develop into a college baseball prospect. With good speed and quickness the 2023 has the ability to play multiple positions on the field and will become more of a threat as strength comes. Breazeale can spray the ball around the field using a line drive approach and is not afraid to lay a bunt down.

+ Catcher Walker Long of Sumrall could develop into a power bat for the Bobcats but for now the 2023 uses a very level bat path and balanced approach at the plate. The strength looks to be there and with a slight upward tick to his path, his line drives could find their way over the wall.

+ LHP Talon Haley of Lewisburg is a left handed pitcher on the rise. The 2025 uses a very controlled tempo with loose, quick arm action. Talon is the younger brother of Mississippi State commit Gage Haley (2023), and with several other pitching prospects, look for Lewisburg to make it tough on opposing hitters for a few years to come.

+ OF/LHP Hayes Raner of Sumrall has the tools to play at the next level, he's just looking for a chance. The uncommitted senior uses a smooth line drive, whole field approach and has good speed out of the box. The 6.65 runner plays a very instinctive outfield cutting down possible doubles in the gaps. On the mound the lefty works up to 83 mph with upside.
