Team Preview: Num. 12 Jackson Prep

Ronald Sims
Mississippi Scouting Director

The Mississippi high school season kicks off on February 26, the first day for regular season games. Most teams will begin practicing on January 29, getting their rosters set and finalizing their lineups.

Over the next several weeks, leading up to opening day, we will be rolling out team previews of high school teams all across the state and across all classifications, eventually launching our Preseason Power 25.

We have been sending out our annual Preseason Questionnaire to coaches all across the state and as the responses flood in we will bring you a snapshot of what to expect along with top players and keys to success for that particular team. If you don’t see your team’s season preview make sure your head coach fills out his Preseason Questionnaire.

Outlook

Coming in at Num. 23 in our Preseason Power25 are the Patriots of Jackson Prep. Coach Brent Heavener  and the Patriots return a young but loaded lineup and solid pitching staff from a team that won 28 games in 2018.

2019 RHP Travis Hudgins will be the most experienced arm on the staff returning from a season where he logged 34 innings and 40 strikeouts. Bryson Weeks will also make a big impact in the rotation coming off a season where he allowed just five walks in 73 hitteres faced. 2021 Kelly Crumpton, a Mississippi recruit, should also step into an increased role on the mound running his fastball into the 90 mph range. Crumpton's offensive ablitity should also prove to be a big piece of the puzzle for the Patriots, as he has shown big time power potential at the plate recording 15 extra base hits with three being home runs as a freshman.

Highlighting the lineup offensively will be the Number 1 player in Mississippi 2019 class OF Jerrion Ealy. A two-sport top prospect, Ealy has displayed solid bat speed and elite level athleticism that is sure to garner a lot of pro attention throughout his senior season. Reed Kullum, Riley Maddox and Spence Graves should also bolster an already strong lineup.

Overall, Jackson Prep is loaded with next level talent and should be a fun team to watch throughout the 2019 campaign as they compete for another MAIS state title.
