Team Preview: Num. 17 Oak Grove

Ronald Sims
Mississippi Scouting Director

The Mississippi high school season kicks off on February 26, the first day for regular season games. Most teams will begin practicing on January 29, getting their rosters set and finalizing their lineups.

Over the next several weeks, leading up to opening day, we will be rolling out team previews of high school teams all across the state and across all classifications, eventually launching our Preseason Power 25.

We have been sending out our annual Preseason Questionnaire to coaches all across the state and as the responses flood in we will bring you a snapshot of what to expect along with top players and keys to success for that particular team. If you don’t see your team’s season preview make sure your head coach fills out his Preseason Questionnaire.

Outlook

Coach Chris McCardle has increased expectations for this group after a 17-11 2018 campaign. With several talented players on the roster, the Warriors are poised to make a deep run in 2019. Highlighting the lineup will be two sport athlete and Mississippi signee, John Plumlee who has shown elite level athleticism that will sure garner some pro attention throughout his senior season. Louisiana-Lafayette signee, Kade Shannon will be a big addition to the lineup in 2019 returning from a season ending injury in 2018. OF/RHP Kris Jones (Pearl River CC signee) should be a offensive threat in this years lineup as he hit .320 in his junior season. Uncommitted seniors Alex Bolling and Nic Scucchi will also be interesting prospects to keep an eye on.

Juniors Luke Lyon and Turner Swistak will lead the Warriors on the mound in 2019 as they combined to log over 89 inning while recording just under 100 strikeouts in their sophmore season. DJ Booth should also be an interesting junior to watch, as he hit .378 last season with eight doubles while driving in 18 runs.

The depth of the roster in combination with young talent and senior leadership should put the Warriors and Coach McCardle in a great position to win a lot in games in 2019.
