Undefeated Teams Fall Short

Mississippi Scouting Director

With the games originally scheduled for Friday as the division opener, the action was moved up to Thursday in hopes of getting the games in despite the chance for rain. The Prep Baseball Report scouting staff was unfortunately unable to attend the matchup but felt the need to cover both games with four Power 25 teams playing and two unbeaten teams looking to continue their winning ways.

Hattiesburg vs Pearl River Central

The Hattiesburg Tigers recorded ten hits and twelve runs on its way to a 12-5 victory over Pearl River Central.

Louisiana-Lafayette signee, Dexter Jordan got the start for the Tigers and was able to give his team a solid outing pitching for six innings, allowing five hits, three runs and two walks while punching out 11.

Austin Dean got the ball for the Blue Devils and worked for four and one third innings and gave up seven hits and five runs while striking out two and walking two.

The Tigers of Hattiesburg would get things going early, when Kameron Wells (Miami Dade JC signee) homered in his first at-bat of the game, giving his team an early 2-0 advantage. Pearl River Central would respond with two runs of their own in the top of the second inning and tie the game 2-2 off the bat of Mason Treat who recorded a two RBI single to right field.

This would be as close as the Blue Devils would get to a lead, as the Tigers post a run in the next three innings and establish a 5-2 lead going into the sixth inning. Mississippi recruit, Joe Gray lead the Tiger’s offense on the day posting three hits in four at-bats and was supported by Kameron Wells, Adrian Felts and AJ Stinson who all finished with two RBI’s.

Trailing 12-3 going into the seventh inning, Pearl River Central tried to mount a comeback, as they posted a run and then proceeded to load the bases with only one out. Now leading 12-4 in the seventh, the Tigers made a pitching change to hopefully minimize the damage, going with AJ Stinson, (Alabama State signee). Stinson was able to work out of the jam and only allow one more run in the seventh.

The quality start by Jordan and the ten hits by the Tigers lineup proved to be too much for Pearl River Central as Hattiesburg claims a 12-5 victory, evening the series at 1-1 and giving the Blue Devils their first loss of the year.

Warren Central vs Gulfport

Although the Gulfport Admirals fought to erase a 4-run deficit in the fifth inning, they eventually fall short, as Warren Central claims a 10-9 victory, giving the Admirals their first loss of the season.

Aaron Greene started the game for Warren Central, but he would only last one and one-third innings, allowing three hits and five runs while striking out three. Colin Standish would come in for the Vikings and earn the win as he would surrend four runs on six hits over three and two-thirds innings, striking out five and walking zero. Christian Oakes also worked for two innings in relief.

Gulfport opened up the scoring in the second inning off the bat of Gabe Lacy, which scored one run. The Admirals would have a solid day at the plate scattering a total of nine hits. Patrick Nelms, Blake Johnson, Gabe Lacy, and Beckett White led the big second inning with RBIs. Additionally, Chandler Feeney, Lacy, and White all managed multiple hits for Admirals.

Although the Admirals had a good day at the plate it was somewhat overshadowed by the strong offensive performance by Warren Central. DJ Lewis led the offensive charge going 3-for-4 at the plate with Shane Lewis and Landon Stewart both blasting homeruns, as Warren Central collected a total of 11 hits. These 11 hits would produce ten runs for the Warren Central Vikings and would be just enough to inch by the undefeated Gulfport Admirals 10-9.
