Mississippi HS Team Preview: Oak Grove Warriors

The 2025 Mississippi high school baseball season is quickly approaching and, as usual, excitement is abound throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Mississippi.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons at Pearl’s Trustmark Park, in the State Tournament finals at the end of May, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Mississippi. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews, eventually releasing our Preseason Power 25 rankings that’ll carry us into the opening week of action.

2025 OUTLOOK

+ Oak Grove enters the 2025 season with high expectations, returning a strong core from last year’s 19-10 team that reached the 7A State Playoffs. With six positional starters and six pitchers back, Head Coach Chris McCardle believes his Warriors will be formidable up the middle, on the mound, and at the plate as they aim for a deeper postseason run.

Leading the way for Oak Grove are senior standouts Maddox Miller (LHP/1B, Mississippi State signee and Future Gamer), Gage Thompson (RHP/INF, Jones College signee and two-time Future Gamer), and Eli Wheat (INF/RHP, Jones College signee and Future Gamer). Junior E.J. Booth (CF, Vanderbilt commit and Future Gamer) returns after an outstanding 2024 campaign in which he led the Warriors offensively with a .432 average and 21 RBIs. Sophomore K.J. Roberts (INF) and newcomer Mac McDaniel are also expected to provide key offensive production.

On the mound, Thompson (8-0, 1.22 ERA) and Miller (4-1, 1.87 ERA) headline a deep pitching staff. They will be supported by Stevens, Wheat, Farmer, and others who are ready to step up when called upon.

Coach McCardle will also look for contributions from a deep and talented roster, including seniors Christian Cannon (RHP/INF), Bryson Chapman (INF), Stratton Farmer (LHP), and Keller Kay (OF). Juniors expected to make an impact include Dawson Baum (LHP/OF), Coby Caillet (LHP/OF), Tyson Chapman (INF/RHP), Roman Irby (RHP), Aiden Kelly (OF), Jared Milsap (OF), Trevon Odom (UT), Caleb Pfaff (C), Mac McDaniel (OF), Brayden Murphy (INF/OF/RHP), Alex Pickett (RHP/OF), and Ryne Stevens (RHP/1B).

A talented group of underclassmen will also look to contribute, including sophomores Drew Bonner (RHP), Brian Brown (OF), Kegan Buckhalter (C), Jackson Dunlap (INF), Aiden Gills (RHP), Andrew Kelly (C), Cooper Miller (INF), Jeremiah Temple (INF), and Drew Tucker (INF/OF), along with freshman Chris Poole (RHP/OF).

Oak Grove opens its season on February 11th against Hattiesburg, determined to make a statement in the 7A ranks and compete for a championship.
