Mississippi HS Team Preview: Oxford Chargers

The 2025 Mississippi high school baseball season is quickly approaching and, as usual, excitement is abound throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Mississippi.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons at Pearl’s Trustmark Park, in the State Tournament finals at the end of May, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Mississippi. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews, eventually releasing our Preseason Power 25 rankings that’ll carry us into the opening week of action.

2025 OUTLOOK

+ Oxford enters the 2025 season with high expectations, returning two positional starters and four key pitchers from last year’s squad that finished 23-12 after reaching the third round of the 7A State Playoffs. Head Coach Cade Hoggard will rely on the depth of his pitching staff as a crucial factor in the Chargers’ success this spring.

Leading the way for Oxford are senior standouts Barrett Kamman (LHP), Sharpe Smith (C), and Brady Maloney (SS), along with key juniors James Blackwood (OF), Josh Scruggs (RHP), and Whitten Ellis (UT). The underclassmen will also play a vital role, featuring sophomores Hayes Huggins (RHP/INF) and Ford Wade (1B/RHP, former Junior Future Gamer), as well as promising freshman Rob Upchurch (RHP/INF).

While the Chargers must replace significant production from last season, Blackwood and Smith are poised to lead the offense. On the mound, Kamman (4-1, 2.05 ERA), Scruggs (3-0, 4.05 ERA), Upchurch (3-2, 3.76 ERA), and Huggins (2-1, 3.00 ERA) are all ready to take on major roles this spring.

Oxford opens its regular season on February 10th against Booneville.
