Prep Baseball Mississippi Staff

The 2025 Mississippi high school baseball season is quickly approaching and, as usual, excitement is abound throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Mississippi.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons at Pearl’s Trustmark Park, in the State Tournament finals at the end of May, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Mississippi. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews, eventually releasing our Preseason Power 25 rankings that’ll carry us into the opening week of action.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state. Each week we will be releasing our Players of the Week and updating the Power 25 rankings.

Jaxon Herod (2028)

2025 OUTLOOK

+ West Union returns 7 positional starters and 4 pitchers from a 2024 team that ended the season at 18-12  after a 3rd round loss in the 1A State Playoffs. Head Coach Ashley Russell believes the overall experience of his Eagles along with pitching depth could key components to a deep playoff run this spring.

Top returners for West Union will be seniors Benton Burks (C, Northeast MS CC recruit) and Grant Martin (P, INF), junior Jon Grey Morrisson (RHP,INF/OF), and freshman Jaxon Herod (RHP/INF).

Morrison was a Future Gamer this past summer and should be very productive both on the mound and at the plate for the Eagles. The 6-5, 220 pounder is a power threat with exit velocities nearing 100 mph while also possessing a fastball that was up to 89 mph in Atlanta. Martin was a big part of the lineup a year ago after hitting .311 and driving in 31 runs and will look to build on that. Burks added 10 doubles to go along with his .366 average in 2024. The freshman Herod was a member of our Junior Future Games squad and is another dual prospect looking to take another step up after a solid 8th grade season.

The Eagles begin regular season play on February 27th versus Kossuth.
