Evolution of the Super Sophomore Series

The Super Sophomore Series was launched in 2024 to address the evolving recruiting landscape. With the Prep Baseball Future Games expanding opportunities for rising juniors, fewer sophomores could participate in this premier uncommitted prospect event. To ensure top sophomore players are identified early, Prep Baseball Scouting Directors created the Super Sophomore Series, providing a platform for emerging talent to showcase their skills ahead of the pivotal recruiting period.

The inaugural event in 2024, held at Wake Forest University and High Point University, saw ten regional teams compete in an exciting weekend of baseball. Performances at the event not only highlighted national-level talent but also reshaped the Prep Baseball Overall Rankings, offering college scouts and recruiters a first look at the best of the 2028 class.

Highlights from 2024

The 2024 Super Sophomore Series delivered exceptional performances, setting the stage for an even more competitive 2025.

Workout Day:

  • Kaleb Sartin (OF, Pulaski County HS, VA): Recorded an impressive 6.40 laser-timed 60-yard dash.
  • Jacob Budarz (3B, Loomis Chaffee HS, CT): Led all hitters with a max exit velocity of 103.4 mph during BP sessions.
  • 28 hitters surpassed 95 mph in max exit velocity, with three exceeding the 100 mph mark.

Game Play:

  • Kaiden McCarthy (RHP, Vermont Academy, VT): Topped all pitchers with a 93.1 mph fastball.

Team North Carolina

Team North Carolina made a strong impression with a roster featuring top-ranked players. Notable performances included:

  • Kellen Rogers (SS, Wake Forest HS): A left-handed hitter with exceptional defensive versatility. Rogers showcased his ability to handle elite pitching while excelling at shortstop and centerfield.
  • Simon Brutskiy (RHP, Apex HS): Recorded a breaking ball spin rate of 3,144 rpm, leading all pitchers at the event.
  • Oliver Van Tiem (RHP, Orange HS): Delivered a polished two-inning outing with an 85–88 mph fastball and a three-pitch mix, demonstrating significant future potential.

Looking Ahead to 2025

The 2025 East Coast Super Sophomore Series will expand to include teams from Georgia and Florida, making it a truly comprehensive showcase of top talent along the East Coast. With players representing some of the strongest baseball regions in the country, the competition promises to be unmatched.

Prep Baseball’s events continue to provide college coaches and scouts with verified data and high-quality video, streamlining the recruiting process and ensuring access to the next generation of talent. In 2024 Prep Baseball player profiles received over 13.4 million views, a testament to the overall reach and impact of Prep Baseball’s work to highlight talent across the country.

The road to the Triangle—Raleigh and Chapel Hill, NC—has officially begun. Mark your calendars for August 1–3, 2025, as the top players in the Class of 2028 gather to showcase their skills and continue shaping the future of baseball.
