Carolina Rockies Scout Day Analysis: 2023 Grads

Brandon Hall & Matt Payne
North Carolina Director of Scouting & PBR Assoc Scout

On Sunday August 4th, PBR was at Forsyth Country Day School to run the PBR Scout Day with the Carolina Rockies.  The day included a full pro-style workout for the position players with a laser timed 60, offensive workout and defensive workout.  Over 40 players were able to update their personal statistics, evaluation, and add video to their PBR Profile.

Today we continue to dive into the individual player analysis with the 2023 graduates in attendance.  Six rising Freshman were in attendance, giving PBR Scouts, and the 800+ college coaches and scouts that subscribe an early look at their skills.  Several bodies and frames stood out with easy projection.  Some with quickness and strength already present.  Below are the full evaluations, with the statistics from the day, as well as links to each player's PBR Profile Page, and their PBR Video.

Carolina Rockies Scout Day: 2023 Player Analysis

Isaiah Brown C / OF / Northeast Guliford, NC / 2023

Thin frame at 6 foot, 161-pounds.  Hits from the right side with a balanced setup with a narrower base.  Weight goes back during his load, with some uphill shoulder tilt and reaching out with his front foot.  Quiet hands and barrel during the load.  Works mostly to his pull side during batting practice.  Lacks some weight transfer through the ball causing an inconsistent barrel path.  Exit velocity recorded at 78 mph and should improve as the body matures.  Some stiffness in the hips behind the plate.  Clean transfers, throwing from a low ¾ slot to second base with his arm topping at 62 mph.  Pop times ranged from 2.56-2.69.  Recorded a 7.72 in the 60.

Jake Dunlap 2B / SS / High Point Christian, NC / 2023

5 foot 8, 125-pound build.  Left hand hitter uses an open, relaxed setup.  Smooth load with a short stride.  Fluid swing with a flat stroke.  Flashes feel for his barrel with a gap to gap approach.  Gets extension through the zone with his exit velocity recorded at 78 mph and should improve as the body matures.  Active feet on the infield catching the ball in the center of his body with clean transfers and long arm action, throwing from a high ¾ slot.   Accurate arm across the diamond that topped at 68 mph.  Recorded an 8.27 in the 60.

Jake Dulski OF / OF / Christ the King, NC / 2023

Young frame at 6 foot, 130-pounds.  Hits from the left side with an upright, balanced setup.  Weight works smooth back during his load with a quiet barrel and short stride.  Pull tendency with his barrel working level through the zone.  Average bat speed with flashes of feel for the barrel.  Exit velocity recorded at 74 mph and should improve as the body matures.  Plays through balls in the outfield with average hands and clean exchanges with a long arm action, throwing from a high ¾ slot.  Positional velocity topped at 75 mph.  Recorded a 7.87 in the 60.

Justin Hayes 3B / RHP / Davie, NC / 2023

6 foot, 190-pound build.  Hits from the right side with a balanced setup with his hands starting above his back shoulder.  Weight and hands work back during the load with a toe tap.  Flat barrel path through the zone, getting extension out front at times with a 1 hand finish.  Lacks some lower half at times in the swing.  Exit velocity recorded at 74 mph and should improve with added strength.  Active feet on the infield to the ball.  Feet stop at catch with us upper half leaning over the ball creating a deep catch point. Clean transfers, with a long arm action, throwing from an over the top slot.  Accurate arm across the diamond that topped at 70 mph. Recorded a 8.17 in the 60.

Colby Umbarger OF / RHP / North Iredell, NC / 2023

Long, lanky frame at 6 foot, 158-pounds.  Projects well with strength and quickness present already.  Impressed from the outfield with an accurate arm and carry that topped at 85 mph.  Plays athletically though balls with fluid feet and average hands.  Clean transfers with a long arm action, throwing from a high ¾ slot.  Hits from the right side with a tall, slightly open setup.  Toe tap during his load, getting his feet back to even.  Some quickness to his hands with average to above average bat speed.  Barrel works uphill through the zone at times with his exit velocity recorded at 88 mph.  “Hitterish” in and around the box.  Good feel for the barrel throughout BP.  Recorded a 7.21 in the 60.  Good burst off the line and will carry top speed longer as he continues to add strength to the frame.
On the mound, uses a small side step and average kick to the low chest.  Stable head.  Hands set at the belt, separating with a long arm swing.  Front side kicks out of balance.  Body is slightly closed as foot strike is across his line, with a square toe.  Athletic hips.  Front side is early to clear, creating some drag on the arm.  High-3/4 slot with good arm speed.  Fastball at 76-78, touching 80.  Misses were up and to the arm side.  Early run out of the hand.  Shows feel for a change at 73-74.  Decent hand speed on the change for deception.  Breaking ball is inconsistent at 67, working for 10/4 tilt, showing a slight hump out of the hand.  Advanced for his age, the frame and arm speed suggest big jumps could come in his future.

Maxwell White LHP / 1B / Hough, NC / 2023

Thin frame at 6 foot 1, 150-pounds with room for growth ahead.  High waisted and long limbs.  Small rocker to the side, shifting the head and body to the 3B side.  Swings the leg toward the belt while the shoulders work closed.  Front side reaches and pulls, allowing the arm to get back to target, falling to 3B on the finish.   Lands across his line with a closed toe at foot strike.  Medium arm swing, working through some stiffness, to a high-3/4 slot.  Average arm speed.  Fastball ranged 74-76.  Slows the arm some on each off speed pitch.  Change-up has some run, and attacked the zone at 65-67.  The breaking ball shows 1/7 tilt at 61-62.
Right hand hitter uses an upright setup with his hands starting in front of his chest.  Weight works back during his load with his front foot working to his back foot then striding out to the ball.  Glides into the ball with a slightly uphill bat path.  Looks to stay in the middle of the field with his exit velocity recorded at 73 mph and should improve as the body matures.  Active feet with some feel around the first base bag.  Accurate arm that topped at 73 mph.  Recorded a 7.33 in the 60.
