Carolina Rockies Scout Day: Quick Hitters

Brandon Hall & Matt Payne
North Carolina Director of Scouting & PBR Assoc Scout

On Sunday August 4th, PBR was at Forsyth Country Day School to run the PBR Scout Day with the Carolina Rockies.  The day included a full pro-style workout for the position players with a laser timed 60, offensive wokrout and defensive workout.  Over 40 players were able to update their personal statistics, evaluation, and add video to their PBR Profile.

Today we take a deeper look at some standout players from the Scout Day.  The statistical leaders were released earlier this week and you can see them HERE.  To see the full statistical breakdown, CLICK HERE.

PBR Scout Day: Carolina Rockies Quick Hitters

  • Will Austin, IF, 2020 (Eastern Alamance HS) - Put together solid rounds during batting practice working gap to gap. Fluid stroke from the right side and does a good job keeping his barrel in the zone.

  • Nicholas Badgett, SS/OF, 2020 (North Surry HS) - Loose, quick hands stand out, lining balls all over the field during batting practice. Has strength to his pull side.  Accurate arm with some carry from the outfield and on the dirt.

  • Wesley Buck, LHP, 2021 (South Stokes HS) – Big winner on the day as the 6-foot-4, 175 pounder touched 83.  When his video posted to twitter, the responses blew up the PBR NC mentions as well as multiple cell phones with text, without a velocity being mentioned.  Secondary stuff is in position to create outs and continue to develop.  The velocity should continue to rise.  This is a name to watch this fall.

  • Drake Carrick, 2B/OF, 2021 (High Point Christian Academy) - Left hand hitter with above average bat speed.  Loose with rhythm, driving balls to his pull side.

  • Noah Hill, C/1B, 2022 (High Point Christian Academy) - Drives the ball with above average bat speed and barrel awareness from the left side.  Made consistent hard contact during batting practice with pop to his pull side.

  • Eli Kitchens, SS/3B, 2020 (West Iredell HS) - Quick hands that get through the zone from the right side.  Used the whole field during batting practice with a line drive approach.

  • Jacob Mabe, SS/OF, 2020 (West Stokes HS) - Keeps his barrel in the zone with quick hands and above average bat speed.  Hit a ton of line drives during batting practice from gap to gap. Posted a sub 7.0 60 time.

  • Alex Minton, RHP, 2020 (Wilkes Central HS) – Senior righty had the top fastball at the scout day, bumping 85 with life.  Quick, loose arm created sink and run out of the hand.

  • Jarrett Murray, 1B, 2020 (North Davidson HS) - Right hand hitter showed loose hands with some barrel whip through the zone.  Drove the ball middle to his pull side.  Above average arm on the infield.

  • Josh Sherrill, 3B/SS, 2021 (South Iredell HS) - Right hand hitter with strength to his pull side.  Above average bat speed with barrel awareness. Drove the ball during both his batting practice rounds.

  • Carson Swaim, RHP, 2020 (Oak Grove HS) – Swaim continues to flood the zone with a solid 3-pitch mix each time he performs in front of PBR.  The fastball climbed to 81, with occasional run, and the ability to locate it to each side of the dish.  Clean arm, smooth rhythm, and good direction seem to suggest he is not quite at his ceiling either.

  • Colby Umbarger, OF/RHP, 2023 (North Iredell HS) - Projectable build with plenty of upside.  Quick hands with bat speed and arm strength.  Could see big jumps in his game in the near future.  On the bump the rising FR touched 80 with some arm speed.
