Corinth Holders Rolls Apex to Advance

Behind a stellar pitching performance by Landon Ginn and nine unanswered runs, the Corinth Holders baseball team would defeat Apex 9-2 on Friday night in the second round of the 4A state playoffs.

Junior and ECU commit Landon Ginn would start on the mound for Corinth Holders, while junior and App State commit Ben Peterson would start on the bump for Apex.

The Cougars would strike first in the opening frame thanks to a two-run home run by Lukas Schram. The Pirates would quickly respond in the next half inning as Nick Tyler would rip an RBI double followed by a pair of RBI singles by Zane Blinson and Gabe Brewington to put the Pirates up 3-2 after one inning.

In the second inning, the Pirates would add two more runs off of a sacrifice fly and an RBI single by Landon Ginn. In the third inning, the Pirates would capitalize on the Cougars defensive miscues and would score four more runs to put the game away. Despite the two runs given up in the first inning Landon Ginn was great on the mound and would pitch six strong innings before Campbell commit Ty Cummings would come in to close the game out in the seventh.

Corinth Holders starter Landon Ginn allowed only three hits, two earned runs, two walks and struck out eight batters in 6.0 innings pitched as he would earn the win. Ty Cummings would come in relief in the seventh and would record one strikeout to the close the game out for the Pirates.

“It was tough to begin with because I was struggling and couldn’t breathe that good. I overcame it and battled all night with my teammates behind me all the way through it. It was the best feeling ever when my teammates backed me up and scored some runs to give me a lead. It definitely felt good to pitch with a lead, and I was in control from there” said Landon Ginn about his pitching performance tonight.

Apex starter Ben Peterson allowed nine hits, six earned runs, three unearned runs, and struck out two batters in 3.0 innings pitched as he would be charged with the loss. Brent Byler would come in relief in the fourth inning and would only allow three hits and would strike out two batters to finish out the game for the Cougars

“Ginn competed for us all night long on the mound. He kept us in the game and there’s one thing I can say about the kid is that he competes in each and everything that he does. Right now our team needed a gutsy performance on the mound, and we got it from him. At the plate tonight we competed with each pitch tonight against a quality arm and scored some runs in the process” said Corinth Holders head coach Adam Weaver.

With the win, Corinth Holders will move to 19-5 overall and will face (8) Laney in the third round of the 4A state playoffs. This will be the first time since the 2016 season that the Pirates will advance to the third round of the state playoffs. Apex will finish the season 13-9 overall.
