Smith Impresses in Chapel Hill Route

Jake Smith (RHP, 2018) is a known name around North Carolina evaluators.  The UNC Wilmington commit catches the eye with a high-waisted 6-foot-5, 170 pound righty works with some ease over the rubber and the fastball jumps out of his hand.  The Chapel Hill HS product may have had his coming out party at the PBR Procase in February where he easily worked at 87-89, filling the zone up with a good two-pitch mix.

Word is out and scouts are flocking to see the righty.  With several in attendance on Thursday night, he did not disappoint.  While the reports of a low to mid-90’s fastball from the week before did not appear, there was plenty to like as reports saw the fastball bump 92 in 6 innings of work where he only allowed 1 hit.

The Chapel Hill HS offense took care of the rest, scoring 3 in the third and 4 in the 5th to open up a lead over visiting Western Harnett HS.  Aided by 5 errors from the visitors, the Tigers had 7 different players with hits and 4 with RBI’s. Colin Liebe led the way with 3 hits, including a triple in the 6th to score Tyler Hansen with their 8th run of the game.

SE Guilford Edges Reagan

On a brisk night at Reagan HS, two teams with high aspirations battled in the Triad.  Southeast Guilford, led on the mound by Ryan Douglas, beat Reagan 3-0. Douglas worked 6 innings, striking out 13, and only allowing 1 hit.

The big blow came in the 4th inning where a walk by Douglas and a hit-by-pitch were followed by a single from Josh Friday.  The ball was misplayed in CF, allowing 2 runs to cross, with 1 out in the innings. Reagan starter Garrett Saylor would settle in getting two strikeouts to end the threat.

Southeast would tack on one more in the 6th on back-to-back doubles from Jax Hackett and Douglas to push the lead to 3-0.

Between the two teams, five total pitchers were used with 29 total strikeouts to only 7 base on balls.  Douglas’ 13 punches led all pitchers, with Saylor racking up 9 strikeouts of his won.
