Harvey Baseball Academy: RHP Analysis

Brandon Hall
North Carolina Director of Scouting

On Friday February 9th, The Harvey Baseball Academy invited Prep Baseball Report into their facility to run a Scout Day with the pitchers in their program.  Over twenty pitchers were in attendance where they threw a controlled bullpen for PBR staff.  Each pitcher updated his PBR Profile with a head shot and stats from the day.  Select pitchers will receive a full evaluation and video to their profile.

In the controlled bullpens, each pitcher threw out of the wind-up and stretch.  Players are beginning to get ramped up for their spring season, but many are still building arm strength and their pitch counts.  The Harvey Baseball staff scripted the bullpens to ensure the players stayed in their normal routines.

Right Handed Pitcher Analysis

Josh Allen RHP / 1B / North Lincoln, NC / 2019

Strong lower half and large frame at 6-foot-3, 210 pounds.  Features three pitches in the zone, commanding off-speed.  Fastball ranged 80-82, downhill, occasional run especially when elevated.  Tall through balance, working level, and landing slightly closed.  Over-the-top slot with average arm speed.  Breaking ball is a gradual downer at 68-71, coming out of the same window as fastball.  Shows feel for change as well at 68-70.  Arm side run to the change-up, slowing the arm at times.

Nathan Beam 3B / 1B / West Lincoln, NC / 2020

Average frame at 6-foot, 200 pounds with some strength in the build.  Long, loose arm works to a 3/4 slot with some quickness in the hand.  Tall through balance, simple leg kick, working level, landing closed.  Soft heel-to-toe strike with the foot slightly closed as well.  Fastball ranged 76-79 with occasional run.  Some feel for the zone but misses were up and to the arm side.  Change-up has arm side action from a similar window as fastball, ranging 72-75.  Has feel and seems to be natural.  Sweeping breaking ball with gradual break is around the zone at 66-69.

Noah Caldwell 2B / RHP / Bandys, NC / 2019

Average 5-foot-10, 155 pound frame.  Three pitches around the zone.  More feel for the zone than the glove.  Fastball plays straight at 72-74, touching 76.  Over-the-top slot on the fastball, floating to a high-3/4 slot for off-speed pitches.  Breaking ball has gradual 10/4 action at 61-64.  Consistent shape.  Change-up has occasional arm speed, sitting 64-65.  Some effort in the delivery with a long arm action and average arm speed.  Level throughout, lands on-line and square.

Elijah Carr RHP / Bandys, NC / 2018

Mature frame with strength present at 6-foot, 195 pounds.  Strike thrower, filling the zone up with all three pitches.  Impressive early season bullpen.  Fastball ranged 82-85.  Some run when thrown to the arm side.  Good feel for a change-up ranging 76-77.  Movement to the arm side is late, coming from a similar hand speed as fastball while slot floated down at times.  Breaking ball sat 70-73, working for 11/5 tilt, settling for softer 10/4 action at times.  Some rhythm through the delivery, with level shoulders, landing on-line and slightly closed at the foot strike.  Short arm swing works with quickness to a high-3/4 slot.  Repeats the delivery.

Chance Daquila RHP / OF / Mount Pleasant, NC / 2019

Strength is present at 6-foot-2, 200 pounds.  Features pitch-ability with three pitches in the zone and the ability to pitch down in the zone with the fastball.  Fastball sat 82-85 with slight run.  Average leg kick, staying level to foot strike, working on-line.  Some rhythm to the delivery with a long arm swing and high-3/4 release.  Curveball works out of a similar window as the fastball at 72-75.  Gradual shape became late and hard at 74-75.  Change-up is the third pitch, occasionally cutting it, working with fastball hand speed, ranging 71-74.

Jared Emory SS / RHP / Cherryville, NC / 2019

Stands 5-foot-11, 165 pounds.  Quick arm from an over-the top release with a long arm swing.  Slightly closed through balance, landing closed at foot strike and across his line.  Fights to match the foot strike and release point.  Fastball seems to jump at 81-84.  Good spin on the breaking ball at 65-67.  Late tilt wavers between 11/5 and downer type action.  Slot can be inconsistent on spin.  Change-up ranged 70-72, straight, occasionally slowing the arm speed.

Ross Fowler RHP / 3B / Maiden, NC / 2020

Average frame at 5-foot-11, 150 pounds.  Some effort in the delivery, working level, landing on-line and square.  Occasionally falls to the 1B side.  Long arm action bottoms out working to a high-3/4 release.  Front side buys the arm time, releasing the line early.  Fastball worked 77-79 with misses up and to the arm side.  Change-up sat 65-71, occasionally slowing the arm.  Straight, it is around the zone.  Breaking ball has gradual, 10/4 arc at 63-64.  Slows the arm at times.  Front side leaves the line early, creating some early tilt from the body.

Tristan Millsaps RHP / SS / Alexander Central, NC / 2019

Athletic frame with long limbs, listed at 6-foot-2, 155 pounds.  Plenty of room to continue to add strength to the maturing build.  Fastball up to 84, sitting 81-83 from a quick, loose arm.  Long arm swing gets to a high-3/4 release.  Easy arm is easy to project future growth on.  Smooth delivery, works level, landing on-line and square, finishing athletic.  Occasionally rolls through balance, forcing the arm speed to make up for the timing.  Change-up has arm side run at 75-77, with feel for the glove.  Chance to create swing and miss off the deception.  Curveball rolled out of the hand with 11/5 tilt at 69-74.  Slider plays ahead of the curveball at 76-80 with hard side-to-side action.  High ceiling on both spin pitches as there is tight spin.

Eli Moser RHP / SS / Bunker Hill, NC / 2018

Still maturing with a thin, 6-foot-2, 155 pound frame.  Average to above arm speed from a short arm action, working to a high-3/4 slot.  Some effort as the shoulders tilt uphill, landing on-line and square.  Good leverage on the baseball.  Fastball sat 78-81, touching 82, occasionally cutting.  Arm side run when thrown to the arm side.  Pounded the zone with fastball and change.  Change-up sat 69-70, with arm side movement.  Breaking ball has late action occasionally, sitting 67-69.  Typically, gradual 10/4 tilt as the front side left the line early throughout the session on spin pitches.
