Myers Park HS Scout Day: Dual Pitcher / Position Player Analysis

Brandon Hall & Matt Payne
North Carolina Director of Scouting & PBR Assoc Scout

In mid-October, as many players are hitting their fall peak and looking forward to some downtime as the winter season approaches, Myers Park High School hosted a PBR Scout Day.  The Scout Day featured 36 players from the 2019 – 2022 classes.  32 of the 36 players call Myers Park HS home.

Position players went through a full workout, including a laser timed 60 yard dash, an offensive evaluation in the cages and live on the field, as well as a defensive workout.  Pitchers were able to throw controlled bullpens where their velocities and stuff were evaluated.  As we begin to dive into the Scout Day, we will start with a look at the statistical information gathered from the day.  Running speeds, exit velocities, arm velocities, pop time and more were all recorded giving coaches and scouts their first glimpse at this talented group of players.

Five 2021 Myers Park HS players took part in the day as both position players and pitchers.  Several showed an ability to attack with a change-up and flood the zone with at least a 2-pitch mix.  A couple of the body types should continue to develop allowing some of the swing paths to generate damage in the coming years.

By The Numbers:
+ 36 players took part in the Scout Day
+ 14 pitchers threw controlled bullpens with Keener leading the way, bumping 88
+ 3 players ran sub 7.00 sixties on the laser timer with another 6 below 7.30.
+ 90 mph was the top exit velocity offensively with 2019 Evan Barbaryka and 2021 Jake Hasner each reaching the number.
+ 11 hitters flashed an exit velocity of 85 mph or better

Dual Player Analysis

Luke Barbaryka 3B / RHP / Myers Park, NC / 2021

6-feet-2, 190-pound strong build.  Offensively he works from the right side using a slightly open setup.  Works back in his load with a short stride.  Barrel works short to the ball, staying level through the zone, looking to get extension out front.  Some feel for the barrel working mostly middle to pull side.  Average bat speed with his exit velocity recorded at 83 mph.  Plays through balls on the infield with fluid feet, average hands and clean exchanges.  Long arm action, throwing from a high ¾ slot with his arm peaking at 74 mph across the diamond.  On the mound uses a short step to the side with his hands working to his belt buckle then back to his chest with a compact leg lift.  Works in line to the plate, throwing from an over the top slot.  Fastball in the zone at 73-75 mph.  Throws his curveball for strikes at 64-66 mph with 11/5 shape.  Flashes a straight changeup at 70 mph.  Recorded a 7.37 in the 60-yard dash.

Logan Hall OF / LHP / Myers Park, NC / 2021

5-foot-11, 150 pounder.  Average frame with plenty of room to add strength in the coming years.  Athleticism is present.  Ran a 7.16 laser timed 60.  Transferred quickness into the box where he hits from the left side.  Slightly open with a smooth, rhythmic load back.  Good balance throughout, working level through the zone, finding a lot of barrel, and staying in the middle of the field.  Excellent hand path.  Carry seemed better than the exit velocity of 81 mph.  As strength improves, he is in position to drive the baseball.   Defensively, remains athletic playing through the ball.  Cautious exchanges with good rhythm to a long arm swing and high-3/4 slot.  Average feel for accuracy out of the hand with a positional velocity of 74 mph.
On the mound the fastball ranged 77-79.  Loose arm action works through a long arm path, slightly behind the body line to a 3/4 release.  Average kick to balance with some rhythm, staying level  and landing on-line and square.  Breaking ball has gradual sweep at 67-68.  Slows the arm slightly on the change-up but has feel with sink at 67-70.  Change-up is second pitch at this time.

Reeves Jones 2B / RHP / Myers Park , NC / 2021

Stands 5-foot-9, 160 pounds with some length in an average frame.   Young, with maturity ahead, using a simple delivery creating stability over the rubber with good posture through the head.  Some rhythm, working on-line and landing square.  Arm is long out of the glove getting to a high-3/4 slot.  Fastball is straight, in the zone at 73-76.  Has feel for a change-up at 68-71.  Slows the arm slightly, attacking the zone.  Breaking ball lacks spin at 66 with gradual action, rolling out of the hand.  All three pitches are in the zone.
Right handed hitter is balanced, using a smooth load back and short stride to get to his launch.  Average batspeed is set for uphill leverage at contact.  Middle to pull side emphasis with some barrel awareness.  Exit velocity peaked at 82 mph off the barrel.  Decent rhythm on the infield, working to play through the ball.   Clean exchanges.  Feet and hands work together through the catch and release.  Short arm action with a release that can be manipulated based on the play.  Arm carried at 74 mph across the diamond.  With added strength to the frame, all numbers could jump including a 7.31 laser timed 60.

Todd Lautenschlager 3B / RHP / Myers Park , NC / 2021

6-feet-2, 150-pound lanky build.  Hits from the right side with his weigh back in his setup.  Small leg kick during his load with his weight gliding into the ball.  Barrel works level through the zone with a middle to pull approach.  Exit velocity recorded at 81 mph.  Plays through balls on the infield with fluid feet, average hands and quick, clean exchanges.  Long arm action, throwing from different slots.  Accurate arm with carry to his throws peaking at 80 mph across the diamond.  From the wind-up he uses a short step to the side with a compact leg lift, with his knee working to around his waist.  Slightly across his body to the plate creating some deception.  Clean, long arm action throwing from a high ¾ slot with a level head and getting extension out front.  Fastball around the zone at 78-82 mph.  Shows feel for his changeup, maintaining fastball arm speed.  Changeup has fade at 67-69 mph. Curveball has depth with 11/5 shape and gradual break at 65-67 mph.  Recorded a 7.7 in the 60-yard dash.

Luke Metzler SS / RHP / Myers Park, NC / 2021

Average frame at 6-foot, 145 pounds.  Plenty of room for maturation in the coming years.  Quickness is present and should increase.  Ran a 7.17 laser timed 60.  Athletic actions on the infield working to play through the ball.  Rhythm between the feet and hands exists.  Average exchanges with some bobbles.  Long arm swing to a high-3/4 slot.  Average carry at 81 mph across the diamond, lacking premium accuracy.  Right handed hitter is balanced using a short stride.  Lacks a defined load.  Some barrel ability working for extension with a middle to pull side tendency.  Short, trying to be direct.  Exit velocity peaked at 80 mph off the barrel.
Quick arm on the mound.  Rushed and choppy through the delivery, rolled through balance at times, forcing the arm to catch up.  Level throughout, lands slightly closed on his line and square.  Long arm action, stabbing slightly at the bottom, getting to a high-3/4 slot with some effort.  Fastball is in the zone, playing straight at 75-78.   Throws a cutter at 71-73 with occasional short, late action.
