NC: 2018 Top Prospect Games Preview: Pitchers

Brandon Hall & Matt Payne
North Carolina Director of Scouting & PBR Assoc Scout

On Tuesday July 24th, close to 80 of the top 2019 and 2020 players from across North Carolina will converge on Boshamer Stadium on the campus of the University of North Carolina.  Each player has been assigned to a team and will go through a workout and controlled scrimmage.. Position players will go through an offensive and defensive workout, followed by live game action where the pitchers will throw two controlled innings.

In last year's inaugural NC Top Prospect Games, over 50 players took part with 40 of the 2018 graduates in attendance making their college commitment after the event.  There were over 15 college and universities represented and 8 pro organizations. With the roster for the 2019 event nearing completion, this will be an event college coaches and pro scouts will attend.

As we prepare for the big event, we will take a quick look at some of the player’s registered to attend.  Today we dive into the pitchers that will throw in Chapel Hill. Each arm will throw a controlled two innings, with an understanding that most players are still in their summer season.  We will give college coaches and pro scouts a good look at each arm, but pitch counts will be kept under control and most arms will not work through too much stress.

2018 Top Prospect Game - Pitchers

Luke Barrow RHP / OF / Wesleyan Christian, NC / 2020

Coastal Carolina commit.  6 feet 1, 175-pound athletic build with room to add strength. Strike thrower with feel for 3 pitches. Quick arm with his fastball sitting at 84-86 mph with occasional arm side run. Features a sharp, late breaking slider at 77-78 mph. Flashes a changeup at 80 mph with fade. Was scheduled to attend the PBR Future Games in Indianapolis in August but he has been very good this summer and recently made his college commitment.  The commitment takes him out of the Future Games but he will continue to have pro scouts evaluating his progress over the next year and a half.  When the 2020 rankings are updated, look for Barrow to make a jump.
