Player Evals: Cougars 2023 PBR Scout Day

PBR was at West Iredell HS on Saturday November 7th for a workout featuring players from the 2023 Cougars organization.  At the same time, an open prospect identification event was run as well.  During the event, position players ran through a full pro-style workout including a laser timed 60.  During the offensive portion of the event, Blast Motion and TrackMan were used to track pre-contact swing metrics and post-contact ball flight.  At the conclusion of the pro-style workout, pitchers threw a controlled bullpen with TrackMan again, following ball flight out of the hand.

Jaron Price 2B / OF / Alexander Central, NC / 2021

Positional Profile: 2B/OF.
Body: 5/9, 140 pounds. Average build, room to add strength.
Defense:  Feet work around the ball, catches the ball out front near center, hands have softness, funnels to the midsection, clean transfers.
Arm: R.   INF - 70 mph.  Accurate, short arm action, high 3/4 slot.
Hit: R. Balanced, open base, hands at back shoulder. Short stride back to even, small hand load back. Short to the ball, level barrel path through the zone, stays through the ball out front, hands have quickness, line drive approach working through the middle and to his pull side.
Power: 79 mph exit velocity from the tee.  Average bat speed, numbers should improve with added strength.
Run:7.47 runner in the 60. 

Thomas Day C / 2B / Lake Norman , NC / 2023

Positional Profile: C/2B.
Body: 5/7, 140 pounds. Strong build.
Defense: 2.12-2.25 pop times. Quick feet, gains ground to target, quick clean transfers across his chest.
Arm: R. C - 70 mph.  Accurate, short arm action, over the top slot.
Hit: R. Balanced, even base, hands at back shoulder. Weight loads back, short stride, quiet hands. Uphill barrel path, high two hand finish, some quickness to his hands, gap to gap approach.
Power: 78 mph exit velocity from the tee.  Average bat speed, numbers should improve with added strength.
Run:7.86 runner in the 60. 

Dyson Lewis 2B / SS / Alexander Central, NC / 2023

Positional Profile: 2B/SS.
Body: 5/7, 130 pounds. Average build.
Defense:  Active feet, relaxed hands, catches the ball near center, funnels to the midsection, clean transfers.
Arm: R.   INF - 69 mph.  Accurate, medium arm stroke, high 3/4 slot.
Hit: R. Balanced, even base, hands at back shoulder. Small hand load back, short stride. Balanced, direct path to ball, flat barrel path through the zone, lined balls through the middle and to the opposite field gap.
Power: 82 mph exit velocity from the tee.  Average bat speed, numbers should improve with added strength.
Run:7.74 runner in the 60.

Mason Millsaps RHP / 1B / Alexander Central, NC / 2023

Positional Profile: RHP/1B.
Body: 6/2, 185 pounds. Long, lanky frame, room to add strength.
Defense:  Active feet, catches the ball out front, average to above average hands, clean transfers.
Arm: R.   INF - 68 mph.  Accurate, short arm action, high 3/4 slot.
Hit: L. Balanced, even base, barrel flat over back shoulder. Small leg kick, short stride, hands load down and back. Hands have quickness, barrel works down to the ball, high two hand finish, gets extension out front at times, gap to gap approach.
Power: 81 mph exit velocity from the tee.  Average to above average bat speed, numbers should increase with added strength.
Run:8.33 runner in the 60. 

Delivery: 1B side. Slight side saddle. Small rocker and easy turn, lifting to the high chest. Stable head. Level, works on-line, landing in-line and square. Short strider. Athletic finish
Arm Action: R. Long arm swing with some athleticism in the arm. Works to an over-the-top slot. Solid direction. Average arm speed
FB: T77, 72-77 mph. 1859 rpm. Strike thrower that attacked the down zone. Some ride through the zone with 12:45 spin at release
CB: 56-58 mph. 1856 rpm. Small hook out of the glove in the wrist. Short, downer action. Occasionally around creating more sweep.
CH: 64-67 mph. 1228 rpm. Average arm speed. Has fade. Throws for a strike.

Spencer Oram OF / SS / Alexander Central , NC / 2023

Positional Profile: OF/SS.
Body: 6/2, 150 pounds. Lean, athletic frame, room to fill out.
Defense:  IF-Athletic, catches the ball near center, average hands, clean tranfers. OF-Athletic through the ball, relaxed hands, catches the ball in front of his left foot, clean exchanges.
Arm: R.   INF - 78 mph. OF - 83 mph. IF-Accurate, long arm action, high 3/4 slot. OF-Accurate, long arm action, high 3/4 slot.
Hit: R. Balanced, even base, hands at back shoulder. Hands load back, short stride. Loose hands, direct path to ball, slight uphill barrel path through the zone, stays through the ball, gap to gap approach.
Power: 85 mph exit velocity from the tee.  Average bat speed, numbers should improve with added strength.
Run:7.35 runner in the 60. 

Alex Sloan LHP / OF / Alexander Central, NC / 2023

Positional Profile: LHP/OF.
Body: 5/7, 115 pounds. Average frame
Delivery: Small rocker and easy turn. Lift to the belt. Stable head and hands through the break. Works level and in-line, landing on-line and square. Slight fall to the 3B side
Arm Action: L. Reach and small plunge out of the glove. Long, at times locked out, working to a high-3/4 slot. Head clears as the arm moves through release. Average arm speed
FB: T65, 61-65 mph. 1559 rpm. Some ride with 12 inches of horizontal break starting out of the hand. 11:00 spin tilt. Around the zone, elevated at times
CB: 53-55 mph. 1592 rpm. Early 2/8 tilt. Big, rolling action. Consistent spin.
CH: 57-60 mph. 1360 rpm. Average arm speed. Throws for a strike. Slight sink compared to fastball movement.

Will Vuk RHP / OF / South Iredell, NC / 2023

Positional Profile: RHP/OF.
Body: 6/3, 180 pounds. Long, lanky frame, room to add strength.
Defense:  Plays through the ball, relaxed hands, catches the ball in front of his left foot, clean transfers.
Arm: R.  OF - 78 mph. Accurate, long arm action, over the top slot.
Hit: R. Even base, more weight sitting on the back leg, hands at back shoulder. Small hand load back, short stride. Level barrel path through the zone, gets extension out front, hands have quickness, gap to gap approach.
Power: 82 mph exit velocity from the tee.  Average to above average bat speed.
Run:7.47 runner in the 60. 

Delivery: Side step and turn, in the middle of the rubber. Kicks to the belt with a small rhythm in the hands. Breaks, leaning back slightly. Small uphill leverage through the shoulders. Reaches to an on-line and square foot-strike. Balanced finish
Arm Action: R. Athletic arm. Medium action to an exaggerated over-the-top slot. Works to create angle. Average to above arm speed.
FB: T79, 77-79 mph. 2008 rpm. Good carry out of the hand with 21.2 inches of induced vertical break. 12:30 spin out of the hand. Elevated at times.
CB: 68-72 mph. 1871 rpm. Average arm speed. Downer tilt. Short action.
CH: 71-75 mph. 1868 rpm. Occasional cut with an average 1:00 spin tilt. Average arm speed

Brice Warren SS / OF / South Iredell , NC / 2023

Positional Profile: SS/OF.
Body: 6/1, 185 pounds. Strong build.
Defense:  OF-Aggressive through the ball, relaxed hands, catches the ball in front of his left foot, clean exchanges. IF-Feet work around the ball, catches the ball left of center, better than average hands, clean transfers.
Arm: R.   INF - 78 mph. OF - 78 mph. OF-. Medium arm stroke, high 3/4 slot, accurate. IF-Accurate, medium arm stroke, high 3/4 slot.
Hit: L. Relaxed, even base, hands at back shoulder. Short stride, quiet barrel. Short to ball, slightly uphill barrel path, gets extension out front, some quickness to his hands, works through the middle and to his pull side.
Power: 86 mph exit velocity from the tee.  Average to above average bat speed.
Run:7.23 runner in the 60.

Drew Chapman 1B / RHP / Alexander Central , NC / 2024

Positional Profile: 1B/RHP.
Body: 5/8, 170 pounds. Average build, room for maturation ahead.
Defense:  Active feet, relaxed hands, catches the ball near center, clean transfers.
Arm: R.   INF - 63 mph.  Accurate, short arm action, high 3/4 slot.
Hit: R. Balanced, even base, hands at back shoulder. Long stride, small hand load back. Short path to ball, barrel stays through the zone, gets extension out front, hands have quickness, gap to gap approach.
Power: 78 mph exit velocity from the tee.  Average bat speed, numbers should improve with added strength.
Run:8.22 runner in the 60. 

Delivery: Small rocker to the side and turn. Kick to the mid-chest. Small pelvic tilt up. Tight hips. Swings to an on-line and square landing. Works level throughout. Athletic finish.
Arm Action: R. Long arm action with some effort to a high-3/4 slot. Average arm speed.
FB: T71, 69-71 mph. 1858 rpm. 12:30 spin at release. Stays true. Some feel for the glove side
CB: 61-63 mph. 1783 rpm. Threw for a strike. Slow, with a hump out of the hand and 11/5 rolling action. Consistent spin.
CH: 64-65 mph. 1249 rpm. Around the zone. Some feel. Slightly lower slot. Some fade metrics with 12:45 spin at release

Nathan Pope C / 3B / Alexander Central, NC / 2024

Positional Profile: C/3B.
Body: 5/9, 220 pounds. Large frame.
Defense: 2.44-2.50 pop times. C-Feet gain ground to target, clean transfers across the midsection. IF-Active feet, catches the ball near center, average hands, clean exchanges.
Arm: R. C - 67 mph. INF - 66 mph.  C-Short arm action, high 3/4 slot, some feel for the second base bag. IF-Accurate, medium arm stroke, high 3/4 slot.
Hit: R. Balanced, slightly open base, hands just above back shoulder. Small leg kick, average stride, weight and hands load back,. Direct to ball, flat barrel path through the zone, gets extension out front, hands have quickness, gap to gap approach.
Power: 84 mph exit velocity from the tee.  Average to above average bat speed.
