Player Evals: South Charlotte Braves - Corner INF & Catchers

PBR of NC continued its coverage of North Carolina on Tuesday September 1st with a full scout day with the South Charlotte Braves.  The Braves organization is based out of Charlotte, NC.  The workout featured 30 players from the organization taking part in a pro-style workout.

The workout included TrackMan gathering data on hitters and pitchers.  The day started with a laser timed 60.  The surface was a little soft from a heavy down pour the day before, creating times that may be slightly slower than if the players had run on a completely firm track.  Following the 60, players worked offensively, taking multiple rounds of live BP.  Defensively, players worked out from their primary positions for PBR Scouts.  Finally, pitchers threw controlled bullpens with TrackMan gathering all the ball flight data out of the hand.

By the Numbers:

  • 30 players took part from the South Charlotte Braves organization
  • 6 players ran under a 7.30 in the laser timed 60
  • 2 players ran under a 7.00
  • 7 hitters produced an exit velocity of 90 mph or higher in BP
  • 101mph was the top exit velocity off the bat in BP
  • 2 catchers posted pop times under 2.15
  • 2 arms worked at 83 or better off the mound
  • 3 outfielders were 84mph or better in their positional workout

Thomas Bolt 1B / 3B / Myers Park, NC / 2022

 

Positional Profile: 1B.
Body: Long, lanky frame, room for growth ahead.
Defense:  OF-Fluid through the ball, soft hands, catches the ball in front of his left foot, clean transitions. IF-Active feet, catches the ball near center, relaxed hands, clean exchanges.
Arm:  INF - 62 mph. OF - 75 mph. OF-Accurate, some carry, medium arm stroke, over the top slot. IF-Accurate, short arm action, over hand release.
Hit: . Balanced, even base, hands at back shoulder. Short stride, small hand load back. Loose hands, barrel stays through the zone, gets extension out front, works gap to gap with some feel for the barrel.
Power: 85 mph exit velocity from the tee.  Average to above average bat speed.

Body: Large frame, strength present.
Defense:  Fluid, quick feet, has body control, soft hands, clean transfers.
Arm:  INF - 67 mph.  Accurate, short arm action, high 3/4 slot.
Hit: . Balanced, even base, hands above back shoulder. Short stride, small hand load. Quick hands, direct barrel path, flat through the zone, gets extension, has barrel feel working through the middle and to his pull side.
Power: 91 mph exit velocity from the tee.  Above average bat speed, makes hard contact, ball carries off his bat.

Mason Diel 1B / 3B / Charlotte Christian, NC / 2021

 

Positional Profile: 1B/3B.
Body: 6/1, 235 pounds. Large frame, strength present.
Defense:  Active feet, feel around the first base bag, above average hands, clean exchanges.
Arm: R.  INF - 65 mph.  Accurate, long arm action, over the top slot.
Hit: R. Balanced, even, wide base, hands at back shoulder, more vertical barrel. Short stride, quiet barrel. Quick hands, direct barrel path, barrel stays through the ball, gets extension out front, drove the ball to both gaps.
Power: 96 mph exit velocity from the tee.  Above average bat speed, ball comes hard off the barrel.

Max Schmidly 1B / RHP / Myers Park , NC / 2023

 

Positional Profile: 1B/RHP.
Body: 6/2, 182 pounds. Athletic frame, room to add strength.
Defense:  Fluid actions, relaxed hands, catches the ball in the center of his body, clean exchanges.
Arm: R.  INF - 65 mph.  Accurate, medium arm stroke, high 3/4 slot.
Hit: R. Balanced, even base, hands at back shoulder. Short stride, small hand load. Balanced, direct barrel path, gets extension out front, works middle and to his pull side.
Power: 87 mph exit velocity from the tee.  Average bat speed, numbers should jump with added strength.
Run:7.86 runner in the 60. 

Delivery: Tall and straight on, uses a side step and slide to the 1B side. Kicks with the head meeting the knee at the high-chest. Fights to be on-line. Level, lands in-line and square. Short strider. Athletic finish
Arm Action: R. Long arm swing with the hands separating over the knee. Above average arm speed, late, as it works to a high-3/4 release
FB: T81, 79-81 mph. 1536 rpm. Early run out of the hand. Totals 15 inches of horizontal break. Has feel for glove side

Defense:  Relaxed, fluid, soft hands, clean exchanges.
Arm: R.  INF - 81 mph.  Accurate with some carry, short arm action, high 3/4 slot.
Hit: R. Relaxed, tall, even base, hands at back shoulder. Smooth load, short stride, hands get back. Quick hands, short stroke, barrel stays through the ball, drives the ball through the middle of the field.
Power: 101 mph exit velocity from the tee.  Above average bat speed, lots of hard contact, ball carries off his barrel.

Will Boyce 3B / 1B / Covenant Day School, NC / 2023

 

Positional Profile: 3B/1B.
Body: 5/10, 180 pounds. Thick frame, strength present.
Defense:  Active feet, soft hands, catches the ball left of center, funnels to the belt, clean transitions.
Arm: R.  INF - 71 mph.  Accurate, medium arm stroke, high 3/4 slot.
Hit: R. Balanced, even base, hands just above back shoulder. Weight and hands load back, short stride. Barrel is short to the ball, mostly flat through the zone, some quickness to the hands, uses the whole field with feel for his barrel.
Power: 85 mph exit velocity from the tee.  Average to above average bat speed, some strength off the barrel.

Hit: R. Slightly closed, narrow base, has knee bend, hands at back shoulder. Short stride, quiet barrel. Loose hands, flat swing, barrel gets extension out front, some feel for his barrel.
Power: 74 mph exit velocity from the tee.  Average bat speed, numbers should jump as the body matures.
Run:7.33 runner in the 60. 

Delivery: Slow to quick build up in the delivery. Side step and turn. Lifts to the belt. Some rhythm in the hands. Coils and turns the lower half. Shoulders stay level. Lands on-line and square.
Arm Action: R. Long arm swing to a high-3/4 slot. Average arm speed
FB: T73, 70-73 mph. 2010 rpm. Solid ride through the zone with a consistent 1:15 spin tilt out of the hand. Around the zone with misses to the arm side
CB: 59-60 mph. 1787 rpm. Average to above feel with solid arm speed. Rolls out of the hand with a slight hump. Short tilt.
CH: 64-65 mph. 1527 rpm. Similar release and hand speed to the fastball. Average feel

Delivery: Side step and turn to a kick to the belt. Level and on-line, begins to tilt toward 3B out of balance. Lands across his line with a closed foot-strike. Rotational finish with an occasional fall toward 1B
