One hundred of the top players from across North Carolina converged on Pineville, NC and the On Deck Academy to take part in the PBR Preseason All-State event.  In its third year, the Preseason All-State event has become one of the premier events in North Carolina for high caliber high school players. 

Billed as one of the top events in the state, with an incredible roster put together the day did not disappoint.  Personal records, as well as event records were shattered throughout the day. 

Nine infielders went through the full workout at the Preseason All-State.  The group includes several advanced infielders and several hitters that should make an impact in the coming years.  Below is a full evaluation with statistics and a link back to their video from the event.

Preseason All-State - By the Numbers:

+ The event soldout in record time, over 20 days prior to the event
+ 95 of the 100 registrants showed up for the workout
+ 26 players in the Senior Class
+ 48 players in the Junior Class
+ 80 players ran a timed 30 yard dash.  Median time of 4.08 with 31 players running a 3.90 or better
+ 44 players worked out on the infield
+ 78 mph was median velocity of infielder’s positional throws.  12 players clocked 81 or higher
+ 28 players worked out in the outfield
+ 86 mph was the median positional throw from the outfield with 2 players above 90 mph.
+ 18 catchers workout behind the dish with 6 players recording a positional velocity of 76 mph or higher
+ 2.08 – 2.18 was the median Pop Time range for catchers
+ 9 catchers registered a best pop time of under 2.10 in the workout format
+ 35 pitchers worked out in the bullpen format
+ 83 mph was the median of the max fastballs from each pitcher
+ 13 arms touched 85 or better with one arm reaching 90 mph

 

Preseason All-State Evaluations: 2021 & 2022 Infielders

 

 

Ryan Dee SS / OF / Western Guilford , NC / 2021 5 foot 9, 150-pound build.  Hits from the right side using a tall, balanced setup.  Small leg kick during his load with his head drifting forward. Gets his lower half through the ball with quickness in his hands.  Barrel works level through the zone.  Some feel for the barrel with average bat speed. Exit velocity recorded at 73 mph.  Works to play through balls on the infield with quick feet.  Fights to get the hands and feet in rhythm. Clean exchanges, with transfers near his right shoulder.  Short arm action, throwing from an over the top slot with some accuracy to his throws.  Arm topped at 74 mph across the diamond.  Recorded a 4.33 in the 30-yard dash, 5.12 in the 5-10-5, and 7-7 in the standing broad jump.

 

 

Gavin Fragale SS / 2B / Southlake Christian Academy , NC / 2021 Rankings  StateRank: 62 / POS: 11   5 foot 10, 160-pound lanky build.  Offensively he works from the right side using a balanced setup.  Shifts his weigh back during his load with a short stride.  Looks to lift with an uphill path, working gap to gap.  Average bat speed with his exit velocity recorded at 78 mph.  Fluid feet with average hands on the infield.  Funnels to the belt after catch, with clean exchanges, short arm action, throwing from a ¾ slot.  Some feel for the bag with his throws topping at 77 mph across the diamond.  Recorded a 4.15 in the 30-yard dash, 4.34 in the 5-10-5, and 8-5 in the standing broad jump.

 

 

Tommy Hawke SS / OF / South Brunswick, NC / 2021 Rankings  StateRank: 28 / POS: 5   5 foot 7, 140-pound build.  Hits from the left side using a tall, slightly open setup.  Hands work back during the load with a short stride.  Simple, fluid swing with balance.  Works gap to gap with a slight uphill path.  Feel for the barrel with average bat speed.  Exit velocity recorded at 82 mph.  Plays athletic on the dirt with fluid feet and average hands.  Short arm action, throwing from a ¾ slot with an accurate arm across the diamond.  Positional velocity topped at 76 mph.  Recorded a 3.91 in the 30-yard dash, 4.66 in the 5-10-5, and 8-7 in the standing broad jump.

 

 

Will Marcy SS / OF / Cardinal Gibbons, NC / 2021 Rankings  StateRank: 42 / POS: 7   6 foot 2, 160-pound athletic, lanky build.  Still growing into his body.  Tall setup from the right side of the plate.  Short stride with a small hand load.  Looks to get extension, with an uphill bat path.  Pull approach with the swing getting long at times.  Average bat speed.  Exit velocity recorded at 86 mph.  Athletic on the dirt with quick feet and average hands.  Funnels to the midsection after catch with a quick exchange and long, loose arm action.  Arm has life from a ¾ slot.  Some feel for the bag with his throws topping at 85 mph across the diamond.  Recorded a 3.98 in the 30-yard dash, 4.58 in the 5-10-5, and 9-3 in the standing broad jump.

 

 

Jaxon Masterson SS / 2B / Sanderson, NC / 2021   5 foot 10, 155-pound athletic build.  Hits from the right side using a balanced, athletic setup.  Smooth load with a short stride and his hands working back.  Fluid, balanced swing with barrel awareness.  Hands work through the swing, with a slight uphill path after contact.  Drove the ball middle to his pull side during front toss, finding lots of barrels.  Average bat speed.  Exit velocity recorded at 83 mph.  Plays with athleticism and ease on the dirt with rhythm to his feet and hands.  Soft hands with quick exchanges and the ability to use different arm slots.  Some feel for the bag with his arm topping at 77 mph across the diamond.  Recorded a 4.21 in the 30-yard dash, 4.51 in the 5-10-5, and 8-7 in the standing broad jump.

 

 

Ryan Smith SS / 2B / Apex Friendship, NC / 2021 Rankings  StateRank: 63 / POS: 12 5 foot 10, 160-pound athletic build.  Balanced, slightly open setup from the right side.  Weight and hands work back during the load.  Dives into the plate with a short stride.  Pull approach with the swing getting long at times.  Average bat speed with his exit velocity recorded at 80 mph.  Plays through balls on the infield with fluid feet and soft hands.  Funnels to the midsection after catch with clean exchanges, a short arm action, throwing from a ¾ slot.  Some accuracy across the diamond with his arm topping at 75 mph.  Recorded a 4.23 in the 30-yard dash, 4.77 in the 5-10-5, and 8-4 in the standing broad jump.

 

 

Devin Tonkins SS / 2B / Greensboro Day, NC / 2021 Rankings  StateRank: 66 / POS: 13   Athletic build at 5 foot 8, 145-pounds.  Balanced, athletic setup from the right side.  Smooth back in his load with a short stride.  Simple swing with some quickness to the hands.  Feel for the barrel with solid rounds of front toss, lining balls gap to gap.  Barrel works short to the ball, staying in the zone.  Better than average bat speed with his exit velocity recorded at 82 mph.  Plays through balls on the infield with fluid feet and average hands.  Clean exchanges with a long, loose arm action, throwing from ¾ slot.  Accurate arm across the diamond with carry.  Positional velocity topped at 79 mph.  Recorded a 4.05 in the 30-yard dash, 4.89 in the 5-10-5, and 8-0 in the standing broad jump.

 

 

Oliver Zohn 2B / OF / South Garner, NC / 2021   5 foot 4, 125-pound build.  Balanced setup from the left side of the plate.  Short quick stride during his load with his hands working slightly back.  Stands up some through contact causing his bat path to get long at times.  Barrel works level through the zone with some feel for the barrel.  Average bat speed that should improve with added strength.  Exit velocity recorded at 82 mph.  Plays athletic on the dirt with fluid feet and average hands.  Funnels to the midsection after catch, with clean exchanges, and a short arm action, throwing from a ¾ slot.  Accurate arm with carry across the diamond that topped at 75 mph.  Recorded a 4.11 in the 30-yard dash, 4.56 in the 5-10-5, and 8-0 in the standing broad jump.

 

 

Austin Hawke SS / OF / South Brunswick, NC / 2022   5 foot 8, 140-pound build.  Athletic setup from the right side of the plate.  Smooth load with a short stride.  Quick hands with some barrel whip through the zone.  Good approach looking to line balls gap to gap.  Barrel works level through the zone.  Some looseness in the hands with average bat speed.  Exit velocity recorded at 80 mph.  Plays through balls on the infield with fluid feet and average hands.  Funnels to the midsection after catch with quick, clean exchanges.  Short arm action, throwing from a ¾ slot.  Some accuracy across the diamond with his arm topping at 76 mph.  Recorded a 4.12 in the 30-yard dash, 4.76 in the 5-10-5, and 8-10 in the standing broad jump.
