Providence Advances Past Lake Norman to 3rd Round

Lake Norman – 3             Providence – 7

Recap:

In the second round of the NCHSAA 4A State Playoffs, Providence HS hosted Lake Norman HS.   With a 1st round bye, Providence had their ace, 2019 RHP Noah Hall, an Appalachian State commit, available to face a strong Lake Norman lineup. 

Providence got on the board early with a two out walk from Walker Wolf, followed by two, two strike hits by Sam Kagan and JD Yakubinis to take an early 2-0 lead. The Panthers tacked on a run in the third off a lead off double from Patrick Bloomingburg who scored on a two out error to go up 3-0.

Hall cruised through 5 innings on the bump, giving up 0 runs and 2 hits while striking out 9. Lake Norman worked 6 walks but could not follow it up with any hits with runners in scoring position. 

To help his own cause, Hall bombed a 3 run HR into the scoreboard in left-center field in the sixth to extend the lead to 7-0.

The Wildcats would make a run plating three runs in the 7thGage Smith keyed the late rally with a 2-run single.  Panther reliever Eli Jerzembeck would strikeout the final two Wildcats to end the threat.

Providence will advance to the third round, scheduled for next Tuesday at Providence vs. the winner of the Hough vs. Richmond Cty 2nd round game.
