Quick HItters: SBA Lake Norman PItchers

Brandon Hall
Executive Director of Scouting, PBR NC

PBR was on site at Coddle Creek on Wednesday August 14th to run a Scout Day for SBA Lake Norman.  In total, 22 players from the organization took part in the workout.

The position players led off the day with a full pro-style workout.  Players ran a laser timed 60, followed by an offensive evaluation and defensive evaluation.  During live BP, TrackMan was able to gather ball flight information off the bat.  After the pro-style workout, pitchers threw a controlled bullpen, again with TrackMan capturing data on each arm.

Grayson Peel (RHP, Lake Norman HS, 2023) – Some length and still thin at 6-foot-1, 145 pounds.  Lot of maturation still ahead.  Could lead to a high ceiling.  Better than average arm speed, working with some uphill leverage in his shoulders.  Plunges out of the glove and fights to get back on time with an over-the-top slot.  Long arm action.  Fastball up to 78 with 21.9 inches of induced vertical break.  Spin rate maxed at 1974rpm.  Consistent release and hand position.  Tunneled the breaking ball early.  Hard, late, downer action at 68, spinning at 2121rpm.

Ben Whitley (RHP, Community School of Davidson, 2024) – Fastball peaked at 80, spinning up to 2270rpm.  Lacked vertical break with the high spin rate.  12:45 spin tilt out of the hand on the fastball.  Can spin the breaking ball, flashing feel.  Peaked at 67 with a max spin of 2155rpm, producing 0.8 inches of induced vertical break and 14.3 inches of horizontal break.  Hard with big tilt and 10/4 shape.
