Spring Break Notebook: Gaston County Tourney - Day 2

PBR was on hand at Sims Legion Stadium in Gastonia, NC for the Gaston County Easter Tournament.  The Gaston County Easter Tournament features eight teams from the Gaston County area playing in a championship format, each team getting 3 games over 4 days.  PBR was there for Day 2, with the first two games featuring the loser bracket matchups, while the final 2 games of the day would setup the championship game pinned for Thursday.

Bessemer City - 4 Highland Tech - 16


Highland Tech used a big 2nd inning, scoring 11 runs on 2 hits, 4 walks, and 2 hit-by-pitch.  The Rams totaled 5 hits and 12 walks in the big win.  On the mound, three Ram pitchers combined on the win.  Erwing Soza worked three innings in the start, striking out three while only allowing 1 run.


Offensively Kendall Hale led the Highland Tech offense with 2 hits and 2 RBIs.  Parker Ballard had 1 hit, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs.  


Bessemer City had some success offensively, totaling 7 hits over the 5 inning game.  Jashawn Thomas, Blake Splawn, and Caleb Summey each had 2 hits.  


With the win, Highland Tech moved to 5-12 overall.  Bessemer City fell to 4-13.

Hunter Huss - 4 Ashbrook - 8


Ashbrook overcame a 4-5 deficit in the 5th and leaned on 3.1 scoreless inning pitched in relief to secure the win.  Ashbrook out hit Huss 8-4 while only committing 1 error in the game.


Ashbrook jumped out to a 3-1 lead after three, but Huss scored 3 in the top of the 4th.  Three walks loaded the bases, with 2 outs, when a Ulises Atilano single scored Trevon Maddox.  Zack Kimmel would score as well when the ball was misplayed in left.  


In the bottom of the 5th, Ashbrook would answer.  The inning began with back to back 1 out walks.  Cooper York singled home Chandler Meeks to tie the score at 4-4.  Consecutive singles from Manny Watkins and Christian Augustin would move Ashbrook ahead for good.  


Johann Antonio worked 2.1 scoreless innings for the Green Wave.  He was followed by Brayden Auten who worked 1 inning, striking out three.  Between the two relief arms, they did not allow a hit or a run, striking out 4 and walking 2.


Ashbrook moves to 6-12 on the year.  Hunter Huss fell to 1-15.

East Gaston - 8 Forestview - 4


East Gaston rode two big innings to advance to the championship schedule for Thursday night at Sims Legion Stadium.  The Warriors were paced by three hits from Logan Agosta and 5.2 innings on the mound by Elijah Sutherland.


East Gaston got on the board quickly as Agosta led off the game with a triple and scored on a ground out.  Forestview would answer with a run in the bottom half, tying the game on a two out infield error.  


Tied at 1-1 into the 4th, Daniel McClellan singled to start the inning and was sacrificed over to 2B.  On the play he worked to advance to 3B and was able to score on a throwing error.  Later in the inning, back to back two out doubles from Riley Hawkins and Jaxon Dogdill scored Aiden Cloninger and Hawkins, moving the score to 4-1.  


In the 6th, East Gaston would use 5 free passes to score 4 runs, all with two outs.   


Elijah Sutherland worked into the 6th for the Warriors, striking out 4 and allowing 6 hits.  Dylan Howell picked up the save working the final 1.1 innings.  


Tripp Dow was solid in the middle innings for Forestview, but did walk 5 over his 5.2 innings of work.  The Jaguars were led at the plate by Ethan Bray with 2 hits and 2 RBI.


East Gaston advanced to face North Gaston in Thursday’s championship game.  The Warriors are now 14-5 overall.  Forestview fell to 9-8 with the loss.

North Gaston - 6 Stuart Cramer - 4


North Gaston jumped out quickly, plating 2 runs in each of their first two at-bats, but Stuart Cramer stormed back to score 4 in the 4th.  The Wildcats would score the winning run in the 6th and plate an insurance run in the 7th to get to the championship game on Thursday.


Tied at 4 in the top of the 6th, Houston Rector reached on an error to start the half.  He was sacrificed over to 2B.  With 2 outs, Chase Sharpe singled to center field, scoring Rector.  


The top of the 7th got going with a 1 out double from Nate Williams.  He moved to 3B on a ground out, setting the stage for Williams to score on a passed ball.


Kandan Zollo started for the Wildcats, getting a no-decision with 4 innings of work.  Wyatt McSwain earned the win, firing 3 innings of 1 hit ball, recording 4 strikeouts.  


Storm starter Hunter Reavis worked into the 7th, only giving up  3 earned in the loss.  He struckout 5, walking 2.


With the win North Gaston moved to 9-6 overall.  Stuart Cramer fell to 10-8.
