Spring Break Notebook: Shelby Tournament - Day 2

PBR was in attendance for Day 2 of the Shelby Easter Tournament on Wednesday.  Eight teams from the area participated in the championship style tournament with 4 games played on the day at Shelby HS.  The Day 2 schedule saw the losing teams from Day 1 play each other and the winning teams from Day 1 playing to setup the championship matchup on Thursday.

South Caldwell - 11 Piedmont - 10


South Caldwell took a commanding lead early but had to fight off a scrappy and competitive Piedmont Panther club.  In the end, Piedmont would be one run short of the big comeback and would fall to the Spartans.


Spartan FR RHP Connor Setzer picked up the win in relief, firing 2 innings.  Ryan Fox worked the 7th to pick up the save.


With the win, South Caldwell moved to 12-6 on the year.  They did lose to Bandys in a consolation game on Thursday to end their spring break tournament.  Piedmont fell 2-16 with this loss.  They loss to South Piedmont to end their week at Shelby HS on Thursday.

Bandys - 6 South Point - 2


Bandys jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings and did not look back.  The offense registered 9 total hits for the Trojans.  The Red Raiders plated 2 in the 5th but the two Bandys arms stymied the Red Raider offense throughout the game.


Terick Bumgarner worked into the 5th inning for Bandys, allowing 2 earned runs on 3 hits, striking out 9.  Parker Styborski relieved Bumgarner, working 2.1 innings without allowing a hit or a walk.  Offensively Syborski sparked the Trojan offense with 3 hits, including a double and triple, knocking in 2 runs.


South Point starter, Cam Ashe was dominant in stretches, working 6 innings.  He did allow the 6 runs in the first two frames, but he struckout 9 in the first 3 innings and 12 for the game.  Three different Red Raiders picked up the 3 hits for the offense.


Bandys moved to 14-6 overall and won their final contest of the event, going 2-1 for the week.  South Point salvaged their 3rd game of the tournament and finished the event at 10-7 overall.

Shelby - 0 Crest - 7


The Charger offense plated 3 in the bottom of the 1st and never looked back as they received a dominating performance on the mound from JR RHP Ryan Ropp.  


Ropp worked a complete game, striking out 13.  The story of the game was his carrying a no-hitter into the 7th.  With two outs in the top of the 7th, Dallas Marzatt lined a soft looper into left that fell to break up the no-hit bid.  After a walk, Ropp would close the complete game shutout to move Crest into the championship game.


Offensively the Chargers were led by Tucker McSwain’s 2 hits and 2 RBI.  Four Chargers recorded hits on the night.


The Golden Lions starter, Ryan McCrackent worked to keep his club in the game.  He struckout 9, working into the 5th inning.  


Crest moved to the Championship round with the win, but they would lose to Kings Mountain.  They finished the tournament at 13-6.  Shelby dropped their final game of the tournament, going 1-2 on the week, and they now sit at 13-7 overall.

Burns - 2 Kings Mountain - 9


A tight game through 2 innings saw the Mountaineers bust through with a single run in the 3rd, and blow the game open with 6 in the 4th.  Zane Brockman worked 5 innings in the win.


Up 1-0 in the 4th, the Mountaineers got their big inning started with a walk and error, putting runners on 1st and 3rd.  Caleb Broome single to center to start the scoring in this half.  Two more consecutive singles moved the score to 5-0.  A two out single from Cole Irby would plate the final run of the inning, building a 7-0 lead for Kings Mountain.


Colby Putnam started on the bump for the Bulldogs and showed flashes of command of the game, but it spiraled quickly in the 4th.  The Bulldogs made a push in the 7th, scoring 2, but the Mountaineers would slam the door to setup their championship run.


Kings Mountain would beat Crest for the tournament championship on Thursday.  The win moved them to 3-0 in the tournament and 14-3 overall.  Burns would place third, going 2-1 on the week.  They are now 15-3 overall.
