Statistical Analysis: Diamond Deacons Scout Day

Brandon Hall
Executive Director of Scouting, PBR NC

PBR was in Kernersville, NC on Saturday September 5th for the PBR Scout Day of the Diamond Deacons.  The Diamond Deacons program features players in the 2023 and 2024 classes, all living in the Triad Area of NC.

The PBR Scout Day consisted of a full pro-style workout for the position players.  Position players ran a laser timed 60, followed by an offensive workout and a defensive workout.  Pitchers faced live hitters in a controlled setting, showcasing their complete arsenal in a 15-20 pitch outing.

Below we take our 1st look at the PBR Scout Days with the Diamond Deacons with their statistical analysis.  In the coming days, we will continue to break down the workout.  Player videos will be posted in and continued analysis will feature each player from the Diamond Deacon workout.

Statistical Analysis

THE 60 YARD DASH

Players ran a laser timed 60 yard dash during the positional rotations.  The 60 was run on the grass surface.  The surface played true throughout the course of the 60 yards.  The median run time for the event came in at 7.55.

Rank Name State School Class Pos 60-yard
1 Caleb Hammond NC Westchester Country Day 2023 OF 7.11
2 TJ Fergus NC West Forsyth 2024 SS 7.22
3 Evan Cecile NC West Stokes 2023 SS 7.23
4 Levi Strahm NC Reagan 2023 LHP 7.29
5 Kelton Langfitt NC Southwest Guilford 2023 RHP 7.32

EXIT VELOCITY (off a tee)

Hitters worked through offensive testing including an exit velocity station.  The exit velocity station recorded a static exit velocity with hitters working off of a tee and a radar gun giving feedback.  In the coming days, we will also post exit velocity information from the live BP station.

Rank Name State School Class Pos Exit Velo
1 Harrison Lewis NC West Forsyth 2023 RHP 98
2 Kaden Fuller NC West Stokes 2023 RHP 92
3 Steele Lee NC East Forsyth High 2023 RHP 90

5 Braxton Stewart NC East Forsyth 2023 LHP 85

POSITIONAL VELOCITY – INFIELDERS

Infielders were able to workout at shorstop throwing across the infield, or from 1B throwing 3B in the pro-style workout.  Coaches are working to evaluate rhythm, footwork, hands, exchanges, arm action, accuracy, and carry.  To measure arm strength PBR Scouts utilize a radar gun.  Below are the top posted positional velocities from the day.

Rank Name State School Class Pos INF Velo

POSITIONAL VELOCITY – OUTFIELDERS

Outfielders worked out from right field, making throws to the plate.  Throws were measured by a radar gun to gauge arm strength.  Scouts are also working to see exchange, arm path, carry, and accuracy.

CATCHER POP TIMES & POSITIONAL VELOCITY

In the pro-style workout, catchers workout from behind home plate, making multiple throws to 2B, simulating a stolen base attempt.  PBR Scouts did measure the distance from home to 2B on the simulated INF to make sure the distance was accurate.  Scouts again are looking for a quick, clean transition to the release as well as carry and accuracy on the throw.  For catchers, evaluators will put a stopwatch on the “pop time” or the time the ball hits their glove to the time the ball hits the MIF’s glove at 2B.  Coaches can also time the transition from when the ball hits the catchers glove to when he is able to release his throw.  PBR scouts add the radar gun to put a number on the arm strength out of the crouched position.

MAX FASTBALL

Pitchers threw in controlled scrimmage fashion, facing live hitters.  Each arm threw 15-20 pitches, showcasing their complete arsenal.  TrackMan was running, gathering all of the ball flight information, including each pitch's velocity.  Below are the top fastballs from the Scout Day.
