Hough Opens Play at USA Basesball's NHSI

Hough HS is the North Carolina representative in the USA Baseball National High School Invitational tournament, this week at the USA complex in Cary, NC.  Hough, with three division 1 commits on the bump will match up with some of the most talented teams in the country over the coming days.  They opened the tournament with Trinity Christian Academy (FL).

Senior LHP Nick Swiney (NC State commit) got the nod in game one.  Sitting 84-86 and touching 88, Swiney was able to keep Trinity at bay over the course of the first five innings.

Entering the bottom of the sixty, leading 1-0, Swiney hit the leadoff hitter, who was promptly sacrificed to second.  A two out error tied the game at one apiece.  In the 7th, a walk was followed by a sac bunt again.  With the winning run on second, Hough’s second error in as many innings brought home the winning run.

Offensively, Hough struggled to string together chances off of AJ Labas (North Florida commit).  Labas sat 88-92 in the first and was able to attack with his off-speed when the Huskies showed they would be on time for his fastball.  Labas is currently ranked No. 155 in the PBR Overall Ranking for the 2017 class.

East Forsyth Earns Win with Late Heroics

Coming off a one-run loss on Tuesday, East Forsyth used a 4-run 5th inning to drive a comeback win vs. Davie County.  Entering the 5th, the Eagles trailed 7-1 but rallied for 4 in the 5th, 2 in the 6th and a walk-off run in the bottom of the 7th.

The Eagle comeback was started by two singles in the 5th by Jackson May (OF/P, 2019) and Lemonte Johnson (OF, 2018).  A walk would load the bases bringing up Connor Norby (SS, 2018, East Carolina commit) who would promptly single to right, scoring two.  An error on a pick and a single by Harrison Hayse (INF/OF, 2017) would have East within striking distance.

In the 7th, with the game tied, East loaded the bases with one out on a couple of singles and a walk.  Jackson May stepped back to the plate and stroked a 2-2 pitch to center field, scoring Blake Williams (INF/P, 2018).

Davie built the big lead on the back of a strong 3rd inning.  A bases loaded single by Ben Summers scored two, giving Davie a 3-1 lead.  Carson Whisenhunt followed with a 3 run homer to right in a 1-0 count.
