Brandon Hall
North Carolina Director of Scouting

As we wind down another great year, we begin to take a look back at 2018.  After drilling down into our google analytics, we have compiled a list of the twenty most viewed PBR profiles in North Carolina.  Beginning on December 17th and ending on December 30th, we will dive into the profiles that garnered the most hits in 2018.

The player profiles in PBR’s vast database received well over 7.5 million hits in 2018.  Players from each region in North Carolina drove coaches, scouts, and fans to their PBR profile to learn more.  Today we take a look at No. 11 in the 2018 countdown of the most viewed profiles from North Carolina

No. 11 – Andrei Beal

Beal is the third member of Team Carolina from the PBR Future Games to make the Top 20 Most Viewed Profiles list of 2018.  Beal flooded the zone with a good mix in Indianapolis.  Ranked inside the Top 100 in the 2020 class, Beal was up to 86 at the Preseason All-State event last January, where he worked out as a pitcher and as an outfielder.

Scouting Report

08.05.18
Stocky build in a small frame at 5-foot-9, 170 pounds.  Strike thrower attacks the zone with four pitches creating discomfort by keeping hitters on their heels.  Fastball up to 84, sitting 80-84 with a curveball at 70-73. Breaking ball works with gradual 12/6 tilt, a slight hump out of the hand, showing the ability to locate it in the zone and expand with it late in counts.  Cutter works from the same window as the fastball, with some length and gradual action. Uses a split finger as his change. Some effort in the delivery with a clean arm swing. Over-the-top release as the head clears the slot slightly.  Lands slightly to the open side at foot strike, working with good direction and extension.

01.28.18
Stocky build, with strength in the legs.  Stands 5-foot-9, 170 pounds.  Arm strength is present, fastball sitting 84-85, touching 86.  Velocity continued to tick up throughout the bullpen.  Good rhythm in the delivery with a quick arm.  Short arm swing hides the ball.  Some effort getting to an over-the-top slot, landing square, on the open side of his line, falling to the 1B side.  Breaking ball at 69-73, erratic at times with late 11/5 tilt.  Good rotation and hand speed.  Command of fastball and breaking ball can continue to improve and should as Beal works into spring form.

Right handed hitter is balanced, using a short stride.  Wants extension, pull tendency, with average bat speed and barrel awareness.  Stiff setup could loosen and quicken the swing.  Exit velocity of 81.  From the outfield the arm continues to work, up to 87 from the position with carry.  Some effort as he works to an over-the-top slot.  Works to play through the ball, slightly stiff on the catch and exchange.  Arm works with quickness through the transition to release.  Ran a solid 4.03 thirty. 4.63 on the 5-10-5 agility shuttle and posted a standing broad jump of 8’5”.

11.06.16
Standing 5-foot-8, 157 pounds and working from an over-the-top slot with average arm speed.  Fastball touched 77, sitting 74-77.  Flashed an ability to create angle with the fastball, when on time, but did leave the pitch elevated when late. Some rhythm issues that can be corrected as the lower half coils at balance and the body looks to load up on the back side.  Works slightly uphill, working to create some leverage, with some effort.  Curveball sat 65-67 with gradual downer action.  The change-up ranged with some potential when the hand speed increases.
