North Carolina Director of Scouting

As we wind down another great year, we begin to take a look back at 2018.  After drilling down into our google analytics, we have compiled a list of the twenty most viewed PBR profiles in North Carolina.  Beginning on December 17th and ending on December 30th, we will dive into the profiles that garnered the most hits in 2018.

The player profiles in PBR’s vast database received well over 7.5 million hits in 2018.  Players from each region in North Carolina drove coaches, scouts, and fans to their PBR profile to learn more.  Today we take a look at No. 14 in the 2018 countdown of the most viewed profiles from North Carolina

No. 14 – Zachary Hammer

The big righty turned some heads with a big fastball throughout the spring of 2018.  Eventually he signed with the NY Mets who drafted him out of the 21st round.  His profile saw a lot of hits in the month of June as Mets' fans were looking for a glimpse of what their club selected.  At 6-foot-3, 170 pounds, Hammer was up to 92 for PBR with a big, top to bottom breaking ball.  Command was still developing as he signed but the tools are in place to suggest a deep run in the Mets system.

Scouting Report

06.19.17
Big arm with plenty of projection left.  Tall over the rubber, carrying his hands around his belt throughout.  Shoulders are closed at balance, creating torque through foot strike.  Fastball peaked at 89, sitting 86-88.  Works for extension with looseness in the hips and body.  Over the top slot, with some head tilt to open up the arm swing.  Breaking ball is late with a power downer action at 73-77.  Threw one change at 82.  Command is behind stuff, erratic with the fastball.  Misses tend to be up and arm side.  Arm works with quickness and strength.

05.09.17
Relief appearance.  Lacked fastball command but the fastball jumped out of the hand sitting 88-89, touching 90 in the short stint.  Flashed a hard, power curveball with late downer action at 76-77.

01.28.17
Lanky and projectable 6-foot-2, 160 pound frame.  Throwing one of his first bullpens of the young year, fastball reached 86, sitting 84-86.  Low hands and an easy rhythm worked to a high-3/4 slot with an average arm swing.  Shoulders stay level, closing the line down slightly at balance.  Breaking ball is advanced, ranging 69-70 with a sharp, power 11/5 action.  Change touched 77 and is the third pitch.  Flooded the zone with all three pitches for a majority of the bullpen.
11.01.16

Fastball has worked up to 86, sitting 82-84.  Missed some time over the summer and fall with injury.  Simple delivery that maximizes the frame.  Looseness in hips and good direction.
