As we wind down another great year, we begin to take a look back at 2018.  After drilling down into our google analytics, we have compiled a list of the twenty most viewed PBR profiles in North Carolina.  Beginning on December 17th and ending on December 30th, we will dive into the profiles that garnered the most hits in 2018.

The player profiles in PBR’s vast database received well over 7.5 million hits in 2018.  Players from each region in North Carolina drove coaches, scouts, and fans to their PBR profile to learn more.  Today we take a look at No. 17 in the 2018 countdown of the most viewed profiles from North Carolina

No. 17 – Jake Smith

This current freshman in college saw his stock catapult up after a very impressive performance at the 2018 PBR ProCase in January.  Throughout the spring season, MLB Scouts were tracking his progress and the 6-foot-5 righty decided to head to Chipola JC in Florida, keeping his draft options open each of the next couple of seasons, after not reaching an agreement with the Philadelphia Phillies.  The Phillies selected Smith in the 21st round of the 2018 MLB Draft.  He had been committed to UNC Wilmington.

Scouting Report

Summer 2018: Committed to Chipola JC

02.11.18

UNC Wilmington commit. High waisted and projectable.  Athletic 6-feet-4, 167-pound frame.  Plenty of room to continue to add strength in the coming years.  Clean, athletic delivery with good tempo and rhythm. Average leg kick, rotates to load the front hip, releasing to an average stride, landing softly heel-to-toe, with the toe slightly open at times.  Quick, loose, arm works to a high-3/4 slot.  Athletic release. FB sat 87-89 topping at 90 with run.  Has feel for the zone showing some command as the bullpen lengthened.  Tight slider with sharp 11/5 break at 75-79.  Hard spin, with a chance to reach a high ceiling with the pitch.  Change-up  is the third pitch right now, sitting 80-82.  Hand slows slightly.  Some occasional downward action, creating misses down in the zone.

03.21.17
Listed at 6-foot-5 with a wiry, straight-line build.  Worked into the fifth inning striking out 4, but walking 6.  Fastball ranged 85-86, touching 88 in the first.  Velocity fell off, settling 82-84, still touching an 86 in his final inning.  Lacked consistent command of fastball.  Breaking ball ranged 73-75 with 11/5 arc and gradual break.  Works from a high-3/4 slot with easy arm effort.  Arm works long out of the glove, with some stiffness.  Tall at balance, from the wind-up, working in-line, finishing toward the 1st base side.  From the stretch, rushes forward with a slide-step affecting velocity and spin.  Threw a couple of change-ups at 78, as definite 3rd pitch.
