Ultimate Performance / Queen City Open Evaluations: The 2020 Pitchers & Duals

Brandon Hall & Matt Payne
North Carolina Director of Scouting & PBR Assoc Scout

The final open event of the winter schedule for PBR North Carolina was held at Ultimate Performance in Matthews, NC on Monday February 4th.  A dual event, PBR was able to run 50 players through a pro-style workout with players attending the open event as well as players from Ultimate Performance club teams going through their scout day.

A total of 13 players from the 2020 class participated in the event with seven working out on the mound.  Two pitcher onlys each show a potential ceiling that could lead to promising success at the next level.  The five dual players have a good mix of athleticism.  Several produced with the bat while others have a future on the bump.

Thin frame at 6 foot 1, 155-pounds.  Smooth delivery, getting started with a short step to the side, tucked during his leg lift, with his knee working to his chest.  Works in line to the plate, landing square, with level shoulders.  Quick arm, with a long arm action, throwing from a high ¾ slot. Deception, as the ball looks like its coming out of his sleeve.  Fastball has some run at 82-84 mph. Breaking ball has 11/5 tilt with late break at 70-73. Feel for breaking ball maintaining arm speed.  Flashed at changeup at 74 mph.  Overall, strike thrower with more to come as body matures.
