No. 4 Providence Outlasts No. 4 Alexander Central

On Saturday No. 4 Providence HS (4A) travelled to No. 4 Alexander Central (3A) in a non-conference matchup of top 10 teams.  Providence overcame a rough first inning, and 3 run deficit, to take the victory, 4-3 in 12 innings.

College of Charleston commit Tim Townsend took the ball for the Panthers and the Cougars of Alexander Central took a quick lead.  Aided by 3 errors, AC would send 9 hitters to the plate and score a quick 3 runs. For the Wildcats, that would be all they got on the day as Townsend settled in, working into the 7th, only surrendering 3 more hits.  For the day he gave up the 3 unearned runs while striking out 5.

Ethan Reese entered in the 7th, closing the inning, and then worked the next 5, giving up 3 hits and 4 walks, but no runs.  As Reese worked the Panther offense was held at bay by Nathan Moretz for the Wildcats. The lefty threw 74 pitches over 6.2 innings, giving up 8 hits.

In the 12th, Panther center fielder Patrick Bloomingburg led off with a single to right.  He advanced to 2B on a SAC bunt from Cameron Bean. A ground out would advance Bloomingburg to 3B with 2 outs.  Sam Kagan then singled to left, scoring Bloomingburg and giving Reese the only run he needed to close the game.
