December often serves as a transitional period for high school baseball players across the nation. While players are preparing for the upcoming spring season, many take a break from on-field activity. However, this "off time" is far from idle. It provides an opportunity to focus on strength training, recovery, and refining daily habits.
As players emerge from the December and early January downtime, notable progress is often observed. Each year, preseason workouts and testing reveal significant improvements that set players up for standout spring performances on the field.
The Prep Baseball staff also experiences a lighter workload during this period. The fall season typically concludes by late October, with North Carolina hosting its final events during the first weekend of November. Compared to the preseason, high school season, and summer season, the fall is less intense for the scouting team. During this time, players are focused on academics and reducing their participation in games and showcases. Although fewer players are evaluated during the fall, the period offers valuable insights for updating class rankings.
In December, rankings for each high school class were updated. North Carolina’s 2025, 2026, and 2027 classes saw modest expansions and adjustments based on evaluations, statistics, and analytics. Similarly, Prep Baseball updated its Overall Rankings at the national level. A significant milestone was achieved with the initial release of rankings for the 2028 class, both at the state and national levels.
North Carolina continues to have a strong presence in the Overall Rankings. These updates highlight the wealth of talent within the state, drawing attention from professional scouts and top collegiate programs. As the spring season approaches, North Carolina’s baseball landscape promises to be a focal point for high-level scouting and recruitment in the years to come.
Welcome to the Show: Spotlight on the Class of 2028
As the high school season approaches, anticipation builds for our first comprehensive look at the 2028 class of first-year freshmen. Throughout the spring and summer of 2024, Prep Baseball scouts diligently identified emerging prospects from this group. While the 2028 class has not been a focal point until now, the groundwork laid by covering the state has resulted in the creation of an initial watchlist for players to follow.
The December release of the 2028 class rankings serves as an early snapshot rather than a definitive assessment. At this stage, limited information exists on most players, and even with early evaluations, the substantial growth expected over the next six months—and the years to come—will likely render these rankings fluid.
Scouting North Carolina’s 2028 Prospects
Initially, the North Carolina scouting team aimed to identify 10-15 players for the state rankings, with plans to expand coverage during preseason events. However, the sheer talent observed at Prep Baseball tournaments, events, and the Junior Future Games in July necessitated a broader approach. The initial rankings list was expanded to include 50 players, with discussions to extend it to the top 75, supported by strong early evaluations.
The depth of talent in North Carolina’s 2028 class is further validated by the Overall Rankings, which featured 150 players nationwide—12 of whom hail from North Carolina. This spring, these freshmen will have opportunities to make significant contributions to their high school teams and demonstrate their potential through the high school season and beyond.
2028 - North Carolina in the Overall Rankings
North Carolina’s strong representation in the Overall Rankings highlights the depth and promise of this class. As these players step onto the high school stage, their performances will undoubtedly shape their trajectories and elevate the state’s already impressive baseball profile.
