Prep Baseball Report

Year In Review: College Commitments

Brian Feekin
Nebraska Scouting Director

Year two in the books for Prep Baseball Report in Nebraska. We followed the high school season throughout the Spring and Legion Summer. We held the Top Prospect Showcase in May, Border Battles in August and Fall Review in November.  We've seen a dizzying amount of baseball players, which allows us to accumulate information and be the #1 resource for high school baseball in the state of Nebraska.

With the New Year approaching, we decided to take a look back through the college commitments made by prospects across the state.

The 2018 class currently has 79 commits, comparatively the 2017 class had 47 commit at this time last year. Twelve of these commitments are to Division-1 programs, 13 are committed to Division-2, 36 are committed to Junior Colleges and 18 are committed to NAIA or Division-3 programs. There are still very strong prospects available including Matt Koeningsman, Brian Leiferman, Braiden Ruffin, Trey Asher, and Logan Mueller.

The 2019 class started picking up some traction this fall with some of the top prospects in the class making their commitments to Divisions 1. Four prospects decided to stay instate at Creighton & Nebraska while James Valdiva committed to Arizona State and hard throwing RHP Sam Wibbels committed to Kentucky. At this point, this class doesn't have as much talent as the 2018 class but should see some prospects make big jumps this spring as they continue to develop physically.

2019 Commitments

Hunter Cerveny NE Wilber- Clatonia 2019 LHP Nebraska
Patrick Collins NE Mount Michael 2019 3B Creighton
Sayer Diederich NE Elkhorn South 2019 LHP Nebraska
Cole Evans NE Grand Island 2019 OF Creighton
James Valdivia NE Elkhorn South 2019 SS Arizona State
Sam Wibbels NE Hastings 2019 RHP Kentucky

The 2020 class has shown the early potential to produce 10-12 D-1 prospects if they continue to develop. Kaleb Carpenter (LHP, Lexington) is the lone commitment in the class this far but as the spring and summer progress in 2018 it wouldn't be surprising if multiple prospects in the 2020 rankings are committed this time next year.
