2022 Spring Team Preview: Bishop Guertin

NASHUA, N.H. - A strong finish to last season brings optimism for the upcoming campaign at Bishop Guertin.

“They are all good kids,” head coach Scott Painter said about this year’s roster. “They all have their individual ways, but they come ready to go. They worked hard in the offseason and are dedicated to the program. They’re committed to being good.”

The Cardinals finished 8-13 a season back, but there were also a pair of playoff victories for a team that relied on three freshmen. Now sophomores, the trio will be helped out by transfers including Evan Kaplo who came over from Bedford. The senior right-hander will pitch and play infield, with fellow senior Brandon Metivier, the seventh-rated 2022 second baseman in New England, helping out in the middle infield and on the mound.

“If he throws strikes he’s hard to hit,” Painter said of Metivier, a Nichols College commit. “Evan Kaplo will also be at the front of our rotation. He pounds the zone.”

Seniors Kam Thibault and Colin Toohey are other right-handers expected to contribute on the mound for the Cardinals along with junior southpaw Dominic Monico. Depth comes from sophomores Jake Boudream, the eighth-ratted 2024 RHP in New England, and Sam Franco, a left-hander who is also a first baseman and outfielder.

“We have a deep pitching staff this season, including a good mix of seniors, juniors and sophomores,” Painter noted. “If our guys throw strikes and get ahead of hitters, we will have a chance to be successful.  They will be backed up by a solid defensive group with plenty of varsity experience.” 

Senior Max Riordan, a Fitchburg recruit, will catch and play first with Monico also seeing time at first base. Luke Anderson is penciled in at shortstop with Monico and Thibault outfield candidates when not pitching.

Junior newcomers with potential to get on the field for Bishop Guertin are Dante Nieto (OF), Adam Wetherbee (C/1B), Cooper Granville (RHP/3B) and transfer Brayden King (OF).

Sophomores Jackson Goldstein, Ryan Haskell, Owen Richmond and freshmen Bryce Larco, Kolby Piper, Jaiden Bosquet and AJ Holmes are among the other talented players Painter is counting on to help the program. 

“We’re excited to get the 2022 season underway,” Painter concluded. “Division 1 baseball in New Hampshire is loaded with top-end talent in 2022, so if we’re able to compete offensively against the better arms in the state, we’ll put ourselves in a good position to succeed.”

Pointer pointed to Pinkerton, Exeter, Winnacunnet, Londonderry, Bedford and Concord as some of the top teams in the state this season.
