MA: College Interest In Future Games Continues To Soar

The 13th annual Future Games took place on July 24-28 at LakePoint in Emerson, Georgia. Top uncommitted prospects in the classes of 2026 and 2027 participated in one of the most popular events each year.

There were 36 teams, including Team Massachusetts, with players representing 43 states plus Canadian prospects. Each team played three games the final three days of the event after all position players are put through a showcase workout on Wednesday, the first day of the Future Games.

More than 300 colleges from across the country were looking on as approximately 500 players participated in this year’s event. This year, more than 450 college coaches from all over the country were in attendance.

2024 Future Games: Team Massachusetts - College Interest In Future Games Continues To Soar

EMERSON, Ga. - It was another record-breaking Future Games as interest in the event continues to rise.

The Prep Baseball event that started in 2011 drew an astounding 425 college coaches, surpassing last year’s previous high number of 375 in attendance.

The attraction? It was obvious with 36 teams featuring players from 43 states and four Canadian provinces. Adding to the interest was the addition of the Senior Future Games with a dozen teams for uncommitted players entering their senior year of high school.

“The sheer amount of talent stood out,” noted Shooter Hunt, vice president of scouting for Prep Baseball. “I had many of the 425 college coaches in attendance come by and say that this was the deepest class that they had ever seen at the event.”

The talent was obvious according to Hunt.

“It seemed like every single arm that toed the rubber had huge upside, and 87-90 became the norm,” Hunt noted. “While the arms were outstanding, I was even more impressed by how comfortable the position players were in the box against those studs. There were some downright scary position player prospects.”

Dennis Healy, Scouting Director for New England and in charge of Team Massachusetts, was impressed with what his team showed.

“I thought the talent was just as good as ever,” Healy said. “We went 3-0 and I thought we swung the bats very well, probably the best offensive production we have ever had. The arms were good and we played solid defense. I thought the kids' energy was great.” 

Healy is excited about what the Future Games can do for the players on Team Massachusetts, which defeated New Jersey, Connecticut and New York during the three days of game action.

“The value of the event is it allows kids from New England to be seen by all the college coaches in the country for an extended period of time, and it may change a players recruiting dynamic,” Healy explained. “As for us (coaches), it is a lot of organizing and communicating, so it is attention to detail.”

As expected, there was interest generated by Team Massachusetts.

“There were questions about this guy or that guy, college coaches doing their due diligence,” Healy said. 

This year’s event also included the initial Senior Future Games for uncommitted players in the 2025 class, with Team New England among those participating.

“I thought the talent was awesome,” Healy said. “It’s a great tool for those still looking for 2025 players.” 

Hunt was thrilled with how it all turned out.

“A record-setting 425 college coaches were in attendance for this event, and that number alone speaks volumes to the importance of the event in the recruiting world,” Hunt said about the 14th annual Future Games for incoming sophomores and juniors along with the Junior Future Games for soon-to-be ninth graders and select eighth graders and, this year, the first Senior Future Games. “There is simply nothing else like it. Many schools were there with three and four coaches because there was so much talent.

“It was fascinating hearing how each school split up the event,” Hunt added in reference to the challenge at hand to see players at each of the three levels of play. “They all appeared to have full on meetings prior to coming to LakePoint to figure out how to dissect the coverage to get the most out of it.”

As for what lies ahead, that is still to be determined.

“Nothing has been set for 2025, but I wouldn't be surprised to see some changes and advancements,” Hunt concluded. “We are never satisfied, and always want to provide the best experience for both the player and college coach so that it is easier for the two to unite.”

PBR: What were your Future Games highlights?
My highlight of the Future Games was playing with a bunch of great players and people all week long. The atmosphere of our dugout was unmatched. Another highlight was hitting an opposite field home run in game two.

PBR: Assess your performance.
I would say my performance all around was great. I displayed well in the showcase, which gave me confidence going into the week. Gameplay went very well. I had some very loud hits and great at-bats all week. I thought my hustle was good, along with me always being there and up for my teammates.

PBR: Give your thoughts on being part of Team Massachusetts and what stood out.
Being on Team Massachusetts was great! What stood out to me was the talent of our guys. Sometimes Northeast baseball can get hidden a little bit, so it was good to go down south to show that we can play ball up in Massachusetts.

PBR: Touch on the competition you faced at the event.
The competition at the event was great. It’s all the best uncommitted players from their state so it is the best of the best. As a hitter it was fun to go down to Georgia and face good arms to give me a chance to compete at a high level.

PBR: How can participating in the Future Games help you in the future?
Participating in the Future Games is a great way to get to the next level if you want to play in college. There are so many schools at the event it is hard to count. Just one week of playing in front of all those coaches allows you to display yourself and talents to a program you are interested in.

My Future Games highlight was pitching two innings against Team Connecticut. During those two innings I struck out three batters and only allowed one hit.

I was very happy with how my outing went!

Being a part of Team Massachusetts was a great experience. I made some lifelong friends and we all share a common goal of playing college baseball.

The competition at Futures was top notch, with some of the best players representing each state. 

PBR: How can participating in the Future Games help you in the future?
The Futures Games helped get my name out and gave me the opportunity to be seen by some coaches. 

PBR: What, if any, college coaches have you been in contact with since the event ended and the Aug. 1 deadline has been reached?
Since the event I have been contacted by around 12 schools.

I thought Team Massachusetts was a very good experience. What stood out most to me was the chemistry between everyone, even in the short amount of time together.

PBR: Touch on the competition you faced at the event.
The competition was definitely harder than most I've faced back in Massachusetts, but I enjoyed the challenge of pitching against talented hitters.

PBR: How can participating in the Future Games help you in the future?
It can help me because of how much exposure there was to coaches at the event.

My Futures Games highlights were going 3-8 at the plate with three singles and didn't make a fielding error at first.

I did ok at the plate. I wish I’d generated more extra base hits but I can’t really complain at 3-8.

PBR: Give your thoughts on being part of Team Massachusetts and what stood out.
It was a very close-knit group. Being from such a small area, everyone already knew each other.

PBR: Touch on the competition you faced at the event.
It was the best of the best. I don’t think we saw a pitcher that didn’t top 85. It was a great experience being there.

PBR: How can participating in the Future Games help you in the future?
It was a dream, it was awesome.

Being a part of Team Massachusetts was very special and I am very grateful for the opportunity. My teammates were all very talented and were very good people all around.

PBR: Touch on the competition you faced at the event.
We faced very good competition over the three-game span, seeing a variety of good pitchers and facing good hitters as well.

PBR: How can participating in the Future Games help you in the future?
Participating in the Future Games helps you get in contact with coaches you may have never been in contact with before. Therefore, it can help you get to a school that you love that’s away from home.

PBR: What, if any, college coaches have you been in contact with since the event ended and the Aug. 1 deadline has been reached?

The Outfielders

PBR: What were your Future Games highlights?
In the showcase I ran a 6.65 60. In the games I went 4-7 with two singles and two doubles (one clearing the bases). I had three RBIs the whole tournament, two stolen bases, scored a couple runs and made a diving catch. In the second game I won MVP going 2-2.

PBR: Assess your performance.
I felt I had a good performance all week, starting in the showcase where I ran a great 60 time and had very good rounds of BP. For the games, I feel like I played great and really competed and focused on letting the ball travel and hit it the other way. I showed my speed and agility by making a diving catch in the field and stealing a couple bags.

PBR: Give your thoughts on being part of Team Massachusetts and what stood out.
It’s always an honor to represent my home state while also competing against some of the best competition in the country. As a group I feel like our team bonded well and our chemistry led us to three victories.

PBR: Touch on the competition you faced at the event.
It’s always great to be able to play and compete against the best players in my class. The competition I faced was some of the best I’ve ever faced and I showed myself that I am able to compete against some of the best in the country.

PBR: How can participating in the Future Games help you in the future?
These games are a great experience and amazing opportunity to play in front of so many coaches and get your name out there.

PBR: What, if any, college coaches have you been in contact with since the event ended and the Aug. 1 deadline has been reached?
Schools that have reached out to me: Boston College, Northeastern, Seton Hall, College of Charleston, Rutgers, Stony Brook, Dayton, UMass Lowell, Fordham, Hofstra.

PBR: What were your Future Games highlights?
My highlight for the Future Games is my team won every game. We went 3-0, which led to us having so much fun winning and bonding as a team.

PBR: Assess your performance.
My performance could’ve been better. I think throughout my at-bats they progressively got better as the games went on. Still, I wish I could’ve done better throughout the entire event.

PBR: Give your thoughts on being part of Team Massachusetts and what stood out.
Team Massachusetts had a bond. We came together and played very well together leading us to win and have so much fun.

PBR: Touch on the competition you faced at the event.
The competition was very consistent, strong, and talented for sure. We didn’t face any “easy” pitchers. The kids were the best of the best and there was no shortage of talent.

PBR: How can participating in the Future Games help you in the future?
The Future Games put me in front of 300+ college coaches. Whether I did well or did bad, this opportunity was huge in shaping my future.

PBR: What, if any, college coaches have you been in contact with since the event ended and the Aug. 1 deadline has been reached?
I have been in contact with Northeastern University

PBR: What were your Future Games highlights?
Some of my highlights were me being able to showcase myself in front of hundreds of scouts over the week. But I think the biggest one for me was winning the Player of the Game award against Team New Jersey.

PBR: Assess your performance.
Performance-wise, I thought I did well. I was able to use my speed to my advantage and beat out a lot of throws when I put the ball on the ground. I was also able to see the ball very well which helped contribute to my success at the plate. Defensively, I didn’t get too much action but when I did, I was able to make the play each time.

PBR: Give your thoughts on being part of Team Massachusetts and what stood out.
I was really honored to represent Team Massachusetts in this event and compete with a lot of other Massachusetts natives. I think what stood out the most is how a lot of us came from different places in Massachusetts and didn’t know a lot about each other, but we all quickly bonded and connected to each other. We instantly built team chemistry which is what I think played a massive part in our team’s success. Not only that, but a lot of players on the team were just great guys on and off the field whether or not they had a good day or bad day. We never pointed fingers when someone made a mistake, and I think that took a lot of pressure off each player when their peers didn’t care whether they made a mistake or not. I believe that was another huge reason why we succeeded.

PBR: Touch on the competition you faced at the event.
I thought the competition was very good that we faced. A lot of the pitchers we faced were better than what a lot of us usually face. And even for the pitchers, I don’t think that they have had to face such strong lineups before because these players are some of the best uncommitted in their state going up against our pitching and vice versa. I also think with the amount of people watching each one of us, it kind of brought out a lot of people’s competitive natures and their best effort whether it was doing the little things extremely well, or coming up in a big moment and delivering, or even making a big moment in a game.

PBR: How can participating in the Future Games help you in the future?
I think that participating in this event will help me a lot in the future. This allowed me to showcase myself in front of hundreds of scouts and put my name on a map for schools. It also got me comfortable with being able to adapt to certain scenarios and changes such as the change of pitchers every two innings, and rotating in the outfield. I am not really used to either of those so it overall helped me with being able to adapt to certain situations.

A couple highlights from my Future Games experience was throwing a runner out at second, and an RBI single in the first game of the week.

My defensive performance at the Future Games was solid. I felt good at the plate, and would’ve liked to hit more, but I had some good at-bats.

PBR: Give your thoughts on being part of Team Massachusetts and what stood out.
Being a member of Team Massachusetts was an awesome experience. I think what stood out was the chemistry that the team made so quickly with never playing together before.

PBR: Touch on the competition you faced at the event.
The competition at the event was like nothing I’ve played with before. Everybody played at such a high level which was exciting to be around.

PBR: How can participating in the Future Games help you in the future?
Participating in the Future Games can help me by getting more and more comfortable with hitting higher velo and playing the game at a faster pace.

PBR: What, if any, college coaches have you been in contact with since the event ended and the Aug. 1 deadline has been reached?
Coaches have reached out and some have also reached out to my travel ball coach with the Expos, Rich Gilbride.
