NORTH ATTLEBORO, Ma. - A future at Northeastern brings a lot of excitement to Andrew Shute. “I’m looking forward to bonding with a group of guys in my class, half that I’ve played with, and getting the full college experience,” Shute explained. “It will be challenging but I’ve always enjoyed a challenge. If I can succeed at that, it will prepare me for life.” A connection with the Coastal Athletic Association university began less than a year ago. “It all started at the GBG Scout Day in February,” the Bishop Feehan junior said in reference to the Prep Baseball event. “I worked hard in the winter, getting in the weight room, and that’s where I hit 88 for the first time. I posted video on the Scout Day and Northeastern was one of the schools that followed me. They came to almost every game of mine in high school.” The interest was genuine. “They offered on Aug. 1, but I said I wasn’t ready yet,” related the 11th-rated 2026 right-handed pitcher in New England. “I had all these others to consider.” It was a “pretty busy” first day of August according to Shute, with “20 or so calls” on the initial day college coaches could reach out to players in the 2026 class. “It was definitely different,” the 12th-ranked junior in Massachusetts admitted. “Last year I wasn’t a very well-known player, but all at once I was. The Future Games helped with that.” Rutgers and Stonybrook were schools that gave offers to the 6-2 195-pounder while Penn State was another in the mix, before the 17-year-old decided in mid-November that Northeastern was his school of choice. “I really liked Northeastern from the start with the academics and good baseball,” Shute said. “Plus, it’s close to home.” Improvement was vital in getting college interest according to the 20th-rated 2026 in New England. “I was topping 81 last summer,” Shute reflected. “I wasn’t strong, I’d never lifted much, and I didn’t have a true pitching coach before. I went to Cressy (Sports Performance) and Blaise Martinez helped me out a lot along with lifting at 508 Evo in Mansfield. That helped me gain strength and velo.” To that, Shute credited Gary Trottier and Joe Breen, while also pointing to Chris Welch with GBG as another big influence in a baseball journey benefitted from being part of Team Massachusetts at the Prep Baseball Future Games in late July. “Up until that point coaches coming to my games were northeast schools,” Shute noted. “The Future Games exposed me to southern schools and some other schools. I went to the Prep Baseball 16U national championships in Georgia and Penn State and Maryland saw me there and followed me. I had a good performance at the Future Games and that helped. It really showed my ability to pitch.” Northeastern came away impressed with what the sixth-ranked junior in Massachusetts could do. “They really like that I can control the run game and strike a lot of people out,” Shute explained. “They said I was one of the few pitchers they saw that was college ready. I’m excited to get to work there.” After all, it is something that Shute has dreamed about. “I always wanted to play college baseball but I didn’t think it was going to be a reality until early last summer when I started having a lot of success,” Shute said The hope is that success continues at the next level. “Hopefully, I’ll be a weekend starter sophomore year if not earlier,” Shute said. “Continuing to work against competition that’s better will help with that.” A 4.0 student on a weighted scale at Bishop Feehan, Shute, who is unsure of a college major, is pleased to be able to relax now that a commitment is official. “It’s a big sigh of relief,” concluded Shute about the decision to attend school just 45 minutes from home. “Now you can focus on yourself and not worry about stats and your success. I’ve always liked Northeastern with the academics and the grittiness of the program. They’ve shown the last five years they’re able to compete with the best teams in the country.” |
