Super 16 invitational: Sunday Notebook

TJ Hunt
Director, PBR New Jersey

Day Two of the Diamond Nation Super 16 Invitational was packed with underclass talent. Here’s a look at some names that stood out:

Stars Baseball Blue

Diego Barrett, RHP, Hylton HS, VA
Lanky, athletic frame at 6-foot 155-pounds. Fastball topped at 83 and sat mostly 79-82. Showed some feel for an 11/5 curveball with tight spin for strikes at 67-68 MPH. Clean arm action from a high-¾ slot, worked into and out of a few jams through his outing.

Coleson Titus, C, Jefferson HS, WV, 2021
2.14 in-game pop time on a caught stealing. Exploded out of the shoot and delivered a strike to 2B.

Wladyka American 16U

PJ Albarella, RHP, Northern Highlands HS, NJ 2021
Albarella stands a lanky 6-foot-1 170-pounds. Fastball sat mostly 76-78 with some feel for a curveball at 65-68. Pitched a ton of varsity innings as just a sophomore. Balanced delivery, high-¾ slot. Will continue to fill out and add some velocity.

Diamond Jacks Super 16U

Connor Grotyohann, 1B, Wallkill Valley HS, NJ 2021
Strong, broad-shouldered frame at 6-foot-3 195-pounds. Serious strength and power at the plate. RHH with simple approach. Ball explodes off the bat. Every time he came to the plate, it seemed like I was anticipating a hard hit double or home run.

Ryan Rumsey, RHP, Paul VI HS, NJ 2021
Lanky, athletic 6-foot-1 193-pound frame with room to fill out. Fastball sat 82-85 with some armside run on 2-seam fastball. Breaker had gradual 10/4 break at 66-67 for strikes. More of an over the top slot with long arm action. Fastball command is present, worked easily in and out to both righties and lefties.

Joseph Mascio, LHP, Bishop Eustace HS, NJ 2021
Athletic 6-foot 170-pounds frame. Fastball dominant in his outing mostly 77-78 touching 79 with subtle armside run. Command and repeatability was at a premium. Threw one breaker with gradual 1/7 bite.

All Out Pack

Justin Szestowicki, RHP/SS, Kingsway HS, NJ 2021
Athletic, put together frame at 5-foot-9 160-pounds. Clean, easy arm action from a high-¾ slot. Fastball sat 87-89 touching 90 once. Curveball showed gradual 10/4  break at 67-68 MPH. Quick, clean arm action. Athletic balance point, drop and drive type. Will fall off to first base on finish. Impressive outing.

Greg Adams, RHP, Garnet Valley HS, PA 2020
Lanky, wiry frame. Fastball mostly 79-82 topping at 82. Went 6+ innings. 65-66 11/5 breaker for strikes and also mixed in a changeup, too. Changeup was a solid complement and got several weak swings.

Ethan Burbage, 3B, Kingsway HS, NJ 2021
Uncommitted. One of the most impressive athletes from the entire day. Lanky, but twitchy athlete with projection. Through two games, stood out with arm strength from 3B and raised eyebrows with an impressive play over the bag at 3B, and a bullet on a line to first base for an out. Barreled a loud ground rule double late in the game to put his team ahead. Definite follow.
