CSI Scout Day: Quick Hits

Brett Harrison
Nevada Scouting Director

The College of Southern Idaho Scout Day was an exclusive event for players within the Golden Eagles program. This Junior College event provided an opportunity for players to receive updated metrics that will be hosted in each prospect's PBR Player Profile with the help of the Blast Motion and TrackMan systems to help provide and unrivals in-depth analysis on each participant. Along with the tech, players also received updated metrics during the Pro-Style Workout portion of the event with the Laser Time 60 Yard Dash, Batting Practice, Catcher Evaluations including Pop Times, Velocity, Receiving and Blocking, Outfield Evaluations and Infield Evaluations. The event concluded with the Pitching Staff being evaluated during the Simulated Game using the TrackMan system to provide extremely detailed metrics of each pitch throw with a slow motion video of the delivery taken on each pitch as well.

Today, we will be highlighting some of our first impressions from the event with our Quick Hits

CSI Scout Day: QUICK HITS

________________________________________________________

+ Greyson Shafer - Freshman | IF/RHP | Uncommitted - The highly touted freshman came into the CSI Scout Day as a "guy to keep an eye on" and it didn't take long to understand why. The 6-foot-3, 205 lbs. two-way prospect has a physical presence with proportionate strength throughout his frame that he combined with quickness and twitch on both sides of the ball. After posting a 6.97 Laser Timed 60, he put on the most impressive batting practice session of the event, not only posting an event best TrackMan Exit Velocity of 102.8 mph, he also post eight Exit Velocities of 95+ mph, showcasing his ability to find the barrel consistently with strength at contact. Defensively, the biggest surprise may have been how well he moves for a player his size. Though he does project more as a third baseman, he actions and range could allow him to hold down the shortstop position as well if needed and with the arm strength he currently possesses (92 mph Infield Velocity), he could shouldn't have a problem with any play on the left side of the infield.

+ Zach Schmidt - Sophomore | OF | Uncommitted - Schmidt played a huge role in the team's success last year as a catalyst at the top of the order, hitting .308 with eight doubles and three trips while stealing 15 bases. Schmidt pairs his athleticism with elite level speed as he ran an event best 6.51 Laser Timed 60 and he uses that speed to amplify each part of his game. He produced a mature batting practice session, using all field while showing his ability to drive the ball to both gaps with a balanced, repeatable stroke. He showed his game changing speed during the simulated game, beating out a routine ground ball to shortstop caught everyones attention. That speed also allowed him to almost make a "Web Gem" type catch on a ball driven to left-centerfield during the simulated game. Schmidt is a player that we expect to have a big year for the Golden Eagles and could make an instant impact for a four year program next year.

+ Stone Cushing - Freshman | UT | Uncommitted - Stone is another freshman with present tools that the College of Southern Idaho staff expects to make an early impact. He used his strong, compact frame well, showing some twitch both at the plate with his 68.9 mph Blast Motion Bat Speed and in the field where he posted an event best 92 mph Outfield Velocity. As a utility position player, Cushing will be mixing in a few different positions this year, keeping his projected potent bat in the lineup.

+ Tate Gambill - Sophomore | OF | Uncommitted - The sophomore outfielder found himself at or near the top of almost every statistical category that applied to him at the College of Southern Idaho Scout Day. He makes up up the other half of the premium level speed roaming the outfield this year for the Golden Eagles as he ran a PBR Verified 6.64 Laser Timed 60, only bested by standout sophomore Zach Schmidt's 6.51. He then produced a loud batting practice session that saw him produce one of the top TrackMan Average Exit Velocities at 89.07 mph with a Hard Hit % of 53.3%.  After his impressive offensive performance, Gambill showed off his present arm strength with a 91 mph Outfield Velocity. The speed of the Gambill/Schmidt tandem in the outfield is going to wreak havoc on opposing hitters as well as on the base paths this Spring.

+ Mason Olson - Sophomore | LHP | Uncommitted - The expected #1 for the Golden Eagles this Spring after a freshman campaign that saw him strike out 60 batters over his 56 innings pitches, posting a 4 and 2 record on the year. With year under his belt at the collegiate level, he took that mound on Wednesday with obvious confidence, attacking hitters with conviction, mixing his pitches well as his fastball sat 89-90 mph, up to 90.3 with arm side life with flashes of some sink. He complimented his fastball with a slider the comes out of a similar slot and plane, sitting at 77-80 mph with some late action as well as flashes of back up, throwing it in any count. We project Olson to have his breakout season this Spring and is an arm that could make an immediate impact at a four year program next year.

+ Casey Anderson - Sophomore | RHP | Uncommitted - The 6-foot-3 sophomore comes in to CSI as a bounce back from the University of Utah. He got a loose arm that comes out of a 3/4 slot that helps create action on each of his three pitches. Though he worked mostly fastball/slider throughout his outing, he showed the ability to command his circle change down in the zone. His fastball cruised at 89-90, topping out at 90.9 mph with run and an Average Spin Rate of 2231 rpm while his slider sat 79-81 mph with an Average Spin Rate of 2508 rpm. Anderson projects to play a significant role on the mound for the Golden Eagles this Spring as a key member of the Golden Eagles rotation.
