GAME RECAP

LEGACY (6) - SHADOW RIDGE (3)

Their was no shortage of electricity in the 4A matchup that featured two teams who are in the mix as favorites to raise the 2022 State Championship trophy at the end of the season. The run scoring got started early with a pair of lead off walks to 2023 IF and Hofstra Commit, Michael Brown, and 2023 OF and Washington Commit, Ty Silva, who both scored shortly after with the help of Uncommitted 2022 IF/RHP, Nolan Aurifonti’s line drive single to centerfield, putting the Mustangs up 2-0 in the top of the 1st. In the bottom of the 2nd, Legacy answered back with an Oscar Pena single the brought in a run to cut the lead in half, then Shoreline Recruit, De’Jon Mitchell drew a seven pitch walk to bring in another run The Longhorns added two more in the bottom of the 3rd when senior shortstop, Richard Leon, double to left-centerfield to clear the bases and put them up 4-2. The battle continued as Shadow Ridge cut back into the Legacy lead with the help of Brown’s RBI groundout to the second baseman, now 4-3. The score sheet remained quiet as 2022 RHP and Chandler-Gilbert CC, Antwon Carruthers, settled in after the 2 run first to 6.1 inning, striking out 8 while allowing 3 earned runs, showing grit on the mound as he shut down any attempt at a late rally, earning him the Player of the Game honors. In the 5th, sophomore outfielder, Colton Stanton, used his sweet stroke from the left side to lace a single to centerfield to bring in an insurance run for the Longhorns and extend the lead to 5-3 after 5 complete, then adding one more in the bottom of the 6th on a passed ball to go into the top of the 7th with a 6-3 lead. After Carruthers reached his pitch limit, Pena’s number was called to finish it out on the mound and he did just that, striking out the next two batters to secure the 6-3 victory in a huge 4A matchup.
