Las Vegas Dirtbag Scout Day: Quick Hits

Brett Harrison
Nevada Scouting Director

With the Las Vegas Dirtbags Scout Day in the books, we now take a look back at the standouts from yesterday's event. The Scout Day included a Pro-Style Workout where players ran a Laser Timed 60 Yard Dash, took a Batting Practice, Catcher Pop Times/Velocity, Outfield Evaluations/Velocity and Infield Evaluation/Velocity concluding with Pitches Bullpens. This was an exclusive event for players in the Las Vegas Dirtbags programs to highlight current players as well as a spotlight on the current state of the program itself.

Coming in as the #1 ranked prospect in 2023 class and he continued to show why he belongs in the top spot. The lefty/lefty carries a quiet confidence throughout his game and lead the event in nearly every category that applied to him. He lead the day off with a 7.06 Laser Timed 60 running thorough less than ideal conditions and down from the 7.30 time he received at the 2020 Future Games. At the plate, he showcased his ability to drive the ball to both gaps with present power coming through to the pull side after posting an event best 91 mph Exit Velocity. He then hopped on the mound with an smooth paced, clean delivery where his fastball topped out at 84 mph paired with feel for his changeup that has the potential to be a plus pitch as his physical development continues and his breaking ball flashes some sweeping action that lived down in the zone.

Uelmen is a player the Las Vegas Dirtbags coaching staff was very high on and after his performance at yesterday's Scout Day, it was obvious why. The 6-foot-2, 180 pound right hander, whose brother is currently in the Chicago Cubs organization, still has some raw features in his delivery, but the looseness his arm that ranged from the 3/4 to low 3/4 arm slot is what sparks the interest in this uncommitted prospect. His fastball showed present arm side life sitting 86-88 mph, living in the zone throughout his bullpen. He complimented his fastball with a pair of secondary pitches that includes a curveball that sat 73-74 mph with some late sweeping action and changeup that has present heaviness at 75-76 mph. His length, bloodelines and feel for his pitches make him a very interesting follow that will be making his way up the 2022 PBR Player Rankings in the upcoming Spring Update.

The Las Vegas Dirtbags Scout Day was Lovering's first PBR event and he made an immediate impression. He was described as one of those "You're going to like this guy" type of guys that Head Coach, Dave Anderson prior to the event. The 2024 middle infielder still has youthful features physically, but the actions both defensively and at the plate were present. Offensively, he took a mature round of batting practice, peppering line drives back up the middle while also flashes his ability spray balls the other way as well as turning on the inside pitch. Defensively, regardless of class, he presented some of the cleanest actions through the ball paired with a share of the top infield velocity at 77 mph. Keep an eye on Lovering.

Just over a year out from the last Scout Day hosted at Faith Lutheran, a more physical Albanese made an appearance at this year's Las Vegas Dirtbags Scout Day with improvements in each statistical category measured at the event. At the plate, he used the imrpoved strength in his lower half to drive balls to the big part of the yard with level bat path through the zone that he used to improve his Exit Velocity to 89 mph. On the defensive side of the ball, he not only decreased his Pop Time from a 2.00 to a 1.97 along with his catcher velocity increasing from 72 to 76 mph. Albanese is projected to be splitting time this year with senior and recent Fullerton College commit, Alec Barrett, but his bat could keep him in the lineup when he is not behind the dish.

The right hander is expected to workhorse of the Dirtbags/Faith Lutheran rotation in the upcoming 2021 season. He has taken a lot of pride in his physical condition over the past year and that has seen his game take off in the velocity department jumping from the low 80's to sitting 84-86 mph with seemingly more in the take. His changeup seems to be his go to secondary pitch that he turns over to get the arm side fade action ranging from 73-74 mph and his breaking ball shows some sweeping action coming out of a similar 3/4 arm slot as his changeup at 70-72 mph. The separator for him is the gamer attitude he carries on the mound regardless if his stuff is working that day, you know you will get a competitor out of him every time he toes the rubber.

The younger brother of Christian is far from a mirror image being mostly a position player, but carries the same competitiveness. He showcased projectable actions on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball and even hopped on the mound to throw his bullpen at the end of the event where he topped out at 80 mph while hovering in the high 70's throughout the majority of his outing. He rounds out a young group of players that are going to be making some noise over the next couple years in the Faith Lutheran program.
