Program Spotlight: Canes West - Las Vegas

Brett Harrison
Nevada Scouting Director

The PBR Scout Days have become our way of kicking the year off with an event where players throughout Nevada are provided an opportunity to update their PBR Player Profiles with the base level information retrieved at the event. From the PBR Scout Day, we are able to track players progess, highlight standout performances and begin the process of selecting the very best to represent Nevada at the 2022 Junior Future Games (2026/2027), the 2022 Future Games (2024/2025) or the 2022 West Coast Games (2023). Both high school programs and club organizations have an opportunity to provide their players with an exclusive Scout Day for players within their program.

This year, we will be adding the use of our TrackMan System to provide each player with the most accurate and relevant information from both hitting and pitching standpoint. Along with the TrackMan, we have rebranded our Open Scout Days in both Northern and Southern Nevada as the Northern Nevada Preseason ID and the Southern Nevada Preseason ID. These new event will provide the same opportunity as the exclusive Scout Days hosted by the high schools and club programs, as they will play a vital role in the selection of Team Nevada for the Summer of 2022.

With the Canes West - Las Vegas Scout Day set to take place tomorrow, we begin our coverage of the event with Program Spotlight feature, highlighting their recent transition from Bases Loaded Elite to Cane West - Las Vegas, their top uncommitted player as well as the upcoming Underclass players you will want to have on your radar.

Canes west - Las Vegas SPOTLIGHT
Director and Head Coach, Craig Colletti

With the recent rebranding from Bases Loaded Elite to the nationally recognized Canes, what benefits have you seen from this transition?

The biggest thing that we have seen from the transition is the exposure it brings to our players. Big events and national tournaments have become much easier to get into with the Canes name. When you provide the opportunity for exposure and have big time events on your summer and fall schedules, it's much easier to get players to want to be apart of your organization.

What are the expectations for players within the Canes West Las Vegas Program?

1. Conduct themselves as responsible and respectful young men on and off the field.
2. Emphasizing the importance of school and grades. College recruiters want to see the ability to play ball on a competitive level and still maintain a good GPA.
3. Strive to be a little bit better at something everyday as a ballplayer and a person.

You have done an exceptional job of finding a high percentage of players within your program an opportunity at the next level. How do you continue to provide opportunities for your Canes players?

The biggest thing is communication. We have meetings with our players and parents about how to navigate the recruiting process. Sometimes they are hard conversations that players and parents don't want to hear but we are honest which is extremely important. We educate our players and families from the time they step into our organization about the process and how important things are. For example GPA’s, what they are posting on their different social media outlets, being a good teammate and person both on the field and in the community. Last thing we sit down and figure out the best fit for every player and family and then get a plan together and go attack it.

Who are the top players you have had come through your program?

2023-2028 graduation years will be looked at with the goal of putting together a team in every graduation year starting end of May through August
