Sierra Vista: Quick Hits

Brett Harrison
Nevada Scouting Director

The Sierra Vista Scout Day in the books, we now take a look back at the standouts from yesterday's event. The Scout Day included a Pro-Style Workout where players ran a Laser Timed 60 Yard Dash, took a Batting Practice, Catcher Pop Times/Velocity, Outfield Evaluations/Velocity and Infield Evaluation/Velocity concluding with Pitches Bullpens. This was an exclusive event for players in the Sierra Vista program to highlight current players as well as a spotlight on the current state of the program itself.

Alan Gaber / C / 2021

Alan Gaber came into the Sierra Vista Scout Day as one of the top Uncommitted backstops in the 2021 class who show improvement in almost each statistical category yesterday. Head lead they Mountain Lions behind the dish in both Pop Time at 1.97 and Catcher Velocity at 76 mph. He stands at a physical 6-foot-1, 205 pounds with present strength throughout that he uses well throughout his game and during the pitcher bullpens he showed flexibility with a kickstand set up to get lower when pitchers were throwing secondary stuff. His foot speed may have been the biggest improvement as he posted the events Top 60 Time at 6.95 and that translated directly to his quickness behind the plate, helping him earn the sub 2.00 Pop Time.

James "JT" Starkus / 1B/3B / 2023

Starkus came into the Scout Day as a relative unknown and left being considered to represent Team Nevada at the 2021 Future Games this summer in Atlanta, GA. He has an athletic build, standing at 6-feet tall and is expected to continue adding strength to his already 186 pound frame. He produced a batting practice round that had the PBR Staff looking at each other impressed and Coach Maxwell giving an, "I told ya so". His event best Raw Exit Velocity at 94 mph translated right into a batting practice round that showcased a simple stroke with elevation through extension that allowed him to show off his present power to the mid-pull side of the yard. Defensively, their is some raw features through the fielding process, but maintain his fluidity in getting the ball out and on it was to the target. This is going to be a players you will want to keep an eye on.

Spencer Blackwell / RHP / 2021

Blackwell toed the rubber at the Sierra Vista Scout Day and showcased command of each of his three pitches using a rhythmic, balance delivery that he repeated well on each pitch. He flashed some arm side life on his fastball that sat 78-81, topping out at 82 mph. His secondary arsenal included a changeup that he showed feel for and an ability to locate at 68-71 mph and a curveball that showed more depth as he located it further down in the zone, at 62-65 mph, but tended to flatten as it creeped higher up in the zone. The low effort he used throughout his delivery make you think that their is more, maybe much more, in the tank down the road if he would was add some strength and size to his 6-foot-1 frame.
