Sparks Blue Sox: Quick Hits

Brett Harrison
Nevada Scouting Director

The Sparks Blue Sox Scout Day in the books, we now take a look back at the standouts from yesterday's event. The Scout Day included a Pro-Style Workout where players ran a Laser Timed 60 Yard Dash, took a Batting Practice, Catcher Pop Times/Velocity, Outfield Evaluations/Velocity and Infield Evaluation/Velocity concluding with Pitches Bullpens. This was an exclusive event for players in the Sparks Blue Sox program to highlight current players as well as a spotlight on the current state of the program itself.

Thomas Rogers / MIF / 2021

Arguably one of the most intriguing Uncommitted seniors during the Northern Nevada Scout Day tour, Thomas Rogers is a long, lean middle infielder at 6-foot-2, 165 pounds with some twitch that was present throughout his game. He found himself at or near the top of every statistical category that applied to him including his event best 86 mph Infield Velocity with carry that should very well keep him on the left side of the infield. His ability to range to both the forehand and backhand side while maintaining smoothness through the fielding process. At the plate, he also earned the share of the event's Top Raw Exit Velocity at 88 mph with gap to gap capabilities and flashes of pull side power potential. Rogers did not disappoint at this first ever Prep Baseball Report and on a normal year, we would expect him to have already been committed, but this talented middle infield with much more to come is still on the market.

Gavin Zappe / C / 2021

The Sparks Blue Sox backstop may not be the statistical standout as some of the other players we have highlighted, but he is the type of player that every program needs as a high character guys with an ability to lead as he was described as a "hand over the key to the program" type by one of his coaches. Defensively, he posted an event best 2.04 Pop Time with each of his throws being around the bag and showcased his present receiving/blocking skills during the pitcher bullpens will translate to the next level. At the plate, he produced a line drive filled round mostly back to the middle of the yard with some flashes of power to left field, but could be reliable as a middle of the order and quality receiving catcher.

Tyler Ramelli / C/RHP / 2024

Ramelli came into the Sparks Blue Sox Scout Day as one of the players the Blue Sox staff was most excited about having in their program for the next few years. The two-way catcher flashes projectable tools on both sides of the ball as well as on the mound, but as of right now his projection lies more behind the plate where he posted a 2.06 Pop Time with some quickness in his feet evident by his 7.13 Laser Timed 60. On the offensive side, he finished second in the Raw Exit Velocity at 87 mph that translated directly to his batting practice round where drove the ball mostly to the middle pull side, but again, the projection with simplicity of the swing and ability to find the barrel makes him an interesting player to follow.
