Top Prospect Games: Quick Hits

Brett Harrison
Nevada Scouting Director

The Top Prospect Games is an Invite Only event that featured a group of standouts from the Scout Day Season earlier this year, giving us an up close look to evaluate the progress made over the past few months as they begin their Summer seasons. This event provided an opportunity players an opportunity to showcases themselves next to similar high caliber players, many uncommitted, with the help of the leading technology in the game with Blast Motion and TrackMan as we also rolling out two new features that will be a fixture at future Prep Baseball Report events in Vizual Edge and Driveline.

Along with the tech, players also received updated metrics during the Pro-Style Workout portion of the event beginning with the Laser Time 60 Yard Dash, Batting Practice, Catcher Evaluations including Pop Times, Velocity, Receiving and Blocking, Outfield Evaluations and Infield Evaluations.

Today, we will be highlighting some of our first impressions from the event with our Quick Hits

QUICK HITS

+ Jordan Boman - 2022 / Centennial / Uncommitted - Extra large frame with present physical strength with impressive athleticism for his size. Balanced, slightly open set up, low hovering leg kick that gets down on time, stays in his legs well. Simple, repeatable swing, consistent/loud barrels. Level bat path with some up hill through extension. Do not get cheated. Produced one of the most impressive rounds of the day, highlighted by 105.57 mph TrackMan Exit Velocity. Homered off the batters eye in CF during game play. Defensively, presented a quality target at 1B, receives well. Improving footwork around the bag. Works through the ground balls well. Has emerged as one of the top power bats in Nevada's 2022 Class his ability around the bag continuing to trend in the right direction, making him an interesting prospect that should attract some attention in the coming months.

+ Logan Cockrill - 2022 / Centennial / Uncommitted - An Under the Radar prospect that continues to produce quality performances at Prep Baseball Report events. Thick build on a large frame with present strength, especially in the lower half. Still maintain flexibility behind the plate. Offensively, has a squared, athletic set up, loaded with a medium leg kick, slight coil in upper half. Up hill bat path, helps elevate ball to big part of the yard. Line drive producer with present pull side power. Defensively, arguably the top defensive catcher in Nevada's 2022 Class. Uses strength well, receives with ease. Flexibility allows him to set up low with athleticism that helps him keep runners at bay. 1.90 Pop Time with each throw around the bag. This is a prospect that projects to be an asset a premium position at the next level, and we expect him to be off the board in the near future.

+ Mikey Cruz - 2022 / Reno / Uncommitted - Thick build on a large frame with proportionate, present strength throughout. Coming off an excellent HS season, continued it at the Top Prospect Games. Starts tall and open with a high leg kick into an exaggerate stride. Works to stay on time. Efficient to the ball. Level swing path with some lift through extension. Produced a mature round of batting practice with line drives to both gaps, flashing power to the gaps as well. Size and speed should keep him at 3B, potential to be an athletic 1B if he continues to add size. Feet work well to receive quality hops. Presents glove well with some lateral range. Showed comfort in the forehand and backhand plays. Understands how to position himself for different hitters. High IQ type with an advanced understanding of his game.

+ Rylan Evans - 2022 / Moapa Valley / Uncommitted - One of the top Uncommitted players in the state, Evans found himself near the top of almost every metric that applied to him. Offensively, has a squared set up with weight shifted towards his back side. High leg kick with hand push load/separation. Short, quick to the ball with a level to uphill swing path with a high one handed finish. Did show a tendency to get rotational. Stays mostly gap to gap with power potential to left/left-centerfield. Athletic actions in the middle, plays with bounce, clean through the ball with range to both sides. Showed an ability to change his arm slots to maintain fluid actions. Feet work to get him quality hops and stay in rhythm. A small school prospect with big upside, could be one of the next Nevada prospects off the board.

+ Ben Lovering - 2024 / Faith Lutheran / Uncommitted - Lean, wiry build on a medium frame with plenty of room for additional strength and size. Offensively, put on one of the top batting practice performances at the event. Tall, squared set up with subtle leg kick load with slight coil in upper half. Efficient path to the ball with a level path through the zone. Showed impressive power potential to the pull side leaving the yard multiple times with much more projected. Defensively, active feet with quality glove presentation. Fields the ball in rhythm with fluid actions to and through the ball. Ranges well to both sides with feel the backhand play and arm strength that at 81 mph that should allow him to remain on the left side of the infield. An intriguing middle infield that has made big jumps in the just the past few month and projects to continue that trend in the coming years.

+ Jason Schaaf - 2022 / Palo Verde / Uncommitted - Schaaf came into the Top Prospect Game after his breakout 2021 High School season. Athletic build on medium frame with some twitch and bounce throughout his game. Got his day started off with a 6.92 Laser Timed 60. Showed athletic action at SS with an ability to range to both sides. Flows through the ball with ease. Posted an event best 82 mph across the diamond, should allow him to stay on the left side of the IF. At the plate, spread/slighty opened set up. Simple pick up/put down stride with coil load in his upper half. Compact swing with some length through extension staying mostly level in the zone. Line drive producer. Notched two base hits during the Simulated Game. Showcased his ability to spray the ball all over the yard. Also showed his two-way capabilities with a fastball/curveball mix that saw him run it up to 86 mph with some good shape on his breaking ball that was very effective when he was able to locate. He projects to move on to the next level as an infielder, but could be an effective HS pitcher for Palo Verde next year.

+ Leo Uelmen - 2022 / Faith Lutheran / Uncommitted - One of the most intriguing arms in Nevada's 2022 class with his older brother, Erich Uelmen, drafted in the 4th round of the 2017 MLB Draft by the Chicago Cubs, Leo has the tools to be an exciting prospect as well. At 6-foot-3, 180 pound, his long limbed frame has plenty of room to add physical strength with his velocity projected to parallel that physical growth. He used a quick paced delivery with little wasted movement with a loose, quick arm from a 3/4 to low 3/4 arm slot. Showed arm side life on his fastball, sitting 87-90.53 mph and working mostly down in the zone. He complimented it with a pair of secondary pitches in a curveball that was shaped more like a slider at 73-76 mph with flashes of back up action and a developing changeup that showed some sink and fade at 75-80 mph, but was rarely used. Uelmen tended to get rotational in his delivery, tending to miss up and in or down and away and with a few mechanical adjustments could see each of his pitches live more consistently in the zone with his velocity also projected to increase with that. This is going to be one of Nevada's most sought after arms over the next year with a high ceiling and only beginning to scratch the surface of his potential.
